Ryan Dolan grabbed his first Deery Brothers tour victory.
What won the race: Ryan Dolan of Lisbon, Iowa, raced to his first IMCA Deery Brothers Summer Series victory Monday during the Iowa State Fair, beating Scott Fitzpatrick of Urbandale, Iowa, and series stalwart Darrel DeFrance of Marshalltown, Iowa. The son of former series driver Roger Dolan earned $3,000 for his 35-lap victory.
Quotable: “My dad has won races at Des Moines. If you’re going to win a Deery Series race, that’s the one,” said Dolan, who started outside Joel Callahan on the front row. “It was just a fantastic night of racing. I followed Callahan for a couple laps and took the lead when he pushed up. The track was fast and I thought with the way the car was handling, I’d be tough to pass.”
Key notes: Dolan's previous best series finish was third last year at Farley Speedway's Yankee Dirt Track Classic. ... Runner-up Scott Fitzpatrick also posted his best career series finish. ... Two cautions slowed the feature; Josh Most slowed on lap 17 and Jason Rauen's engine gave up with eight laps remaining. ... Des Moines hosted the series for the 23rd time.
On the move: Sterling Perkins of Lamoni, Iowa, earned hard charger honors.
Winner's sponsors: Dolan's Rick Dralle-owned No. 51 Rocket Chassis is sponsored by Can-Am Towing, CRE, Hoosier Racing Tire, Reicherts Plumbing and Pat's Auto Salvage.
Points chase: Justin Kay of Wheatland, Iowa, entered with a 12-point lead over Andy Eckrich of of Cosgrove, Iowa, and extended it with a fourth-place finish.
