Ashton Winger enjoys his $5,000 payday at Deep South Speedway.
What won the race: Ashton Winger of Hampton, Ga., ran away to a convincing victory in Saturday night's 50-lap Southern All Star Series-sanctioned Duels in Dixie finale at Deep South Speedway. The 20-year-old talent assumed command from Josh Putnam on lap four and was never seriously challenged the remainder of the distance en route to the $5,000 top prize.
Quotable: “t feels like a big relief,” said Winger, who drove his personal family-owned car. “I feel like we’ve been fast all year and it doesn’t even feel like it’s June. I’ve been doing some really silly stuff behind the wheel and tonight I guess I didn’t. Tonight everything clicked. I hope this momentum continues on to next week (in World of Outlaws events).”
Key notes: A 2020 World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Model Series rookie, Winger beat Ryan Crane to the finish line by a hefty 6.122 seconds for his his third career SAS triumph. ... Winger's previous SAS victories came last year at Tennessee's Thunderhill Raceway Park and Senoia (Ga.) Raceway. ... Winger's WoO car owner, Billy Franklin, drove a team car to a fifth-place finish. ... Putnam's night ended after he led the laps 1-3 and then was caught up in a multi-car wreck on a lap-four restart. He tangled with Joseph Joiner between turns one and two, triggering a jam-up. ... Joiner rallied to finish fourth. ... After winning Friday's opener and setting fast time on Saturday, David Breazeale of Four Corners, Miss., finished one lap down in sixth place after pitting early in the race while running second. ... The weekend doubleheader marked the first visit to Deep South for the long-running series.
Winner's sponsors: Winger’s Rocket Chassis is powered by a Clements Racing Engine and sponsored by Franklin Enterprises, Showtime Properties, Johnny Doan Plumbing, Integra Shocks, Keyser Mfg., Stealth Carburetors, VP Racing Fuels & Lubricants and Boswell Oil.
Points chase: After Deep South Saturday, Sam Seawright (334 points) of Rainsville, Ala., leads Billy Franklin (322), Mark Dodson ( 280), Ashton Winger (268) and Josh Putnam (242).
Current weather: Clear, 75°F
Car count: 18
