Darrell Lanigan takes the Johnny Appleseed Classic checkers.
What won the race: Overtaking mid-race pacesetter Ricky Weiss on lap 17, fourth-starting Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky., ran away with the $5,000 Sunoco American Late Model Series victory in Saturday night’s Johnny Appleseed Classic at Eldora Speedway. He took the checkers 3.143 seconds ahead of Weiss.
Quotable: “Man this place is fast right now,” said Lanigan. “We were here a couple weeks ago and it was wide open. I mean it’s fast. It was a good race. We had a good car the last time we was up here and had a really good piece this time. We got back in our Club 29 car the last couple weeks and man it’s been on fire. I can’t thank Randy Thompson enough. It’s his pieces.”
Key notes: The win marked Lanigan's fifth series triumph. … Polesitter Josh Rice of Verona, Ky., shot out to an early lead but a mechanical issue on the fourth lap sent him into the walls in turns one and two. … The 25th-starting Devin Moran of Dresden, Ohio, was threateneed frontrunners in the final 10 laps but tagged the wall with six laps left to slow his momentum. Moran, who was forced to start at the rear after problems earlier in the program, settled for fifth. … Kyle Strickler, who started 11th, was third and positioned to climb higher when his smoking Team Zero car was forced pitside with five laps remaining. ... Jeep Van Wormer debuted a Longhorn Chassis in finishing 17th. ... The Sunoco ALMS visited Eldora Speedway for the second time this season for the second night of a doubleheader weekend. … ALMS returns to Eldora on Sept. 5.
On the move: Devin Moran of Dresden, Ohio, started 25th and finished fifth.
