Chub Frank in victory lane on the Pace Performance RUSH tour.
What won the race: Regaining the lead from Joe Martin on the final lap, third-starting Chub Frank of Bear Lake, Pa., captured Saturday’s 30-lap Billy Forney Memorial at Sharon Speedway. The 59-year-old veteran took the checkers 2.014 seconds ahead of Martin to earn $3,199 for his first-ever triumph on the Pace Performance RUSH Racing Series.
Quotable: “I got the nose dragging and it was really messing up my entry,” Frank said. “It ended up being a good race. (Martin) dropped down in that last corner and that was my only chance. If he’d have stayed on the top he would have probably beaten me. This (Crate racing) is tough; people don’t realize it. You have to race a lot closer than you do with a Super Late Model. If you make a mistake, they’ll pounce all over you. They are actually harder to drive because you have to make every lap almost perfect.”
Key notes: Frank nosed into the lead for the first time on lap 20 when he overtook race-long pacesetter Michael Duritsky, but Duritsky moved back ahead the following circuit. Duritsky relinquished the top spot to Frank, however, on lap 22 when contact with the slowing Matt Sipes cut his tire. … The remaining circuits featured a close battle between Frank and Martin; Martin snuck ahead to lead laps 28-29, but Martin washed across the track in turn four on the final lap when he shot to the bottom in an effort to block Frank’s slider and Frank beat him to the finish line. … Martin settled for second, falling short of his first RUSH tour victory in nearly seven years. … Series points leader Kyle Hardy finished third in his first career start at Sharon, giving 11 podium finishes in 12 tour events this season. … Making his second career series start, 17-year-old Ashton Briggs won the $200 non-qualifiers’ race. … The series returns to Sharon for a two-day event Sept. 10-11 paying $4,000 to the winner.
On the move: Josh Ferry of Cochranton, Pa., started 25th and started 10th.
Winner's sponsors: Frank's Black Diamond Race Car carried sponsorship from Briggs Transport and Nystrom's Auto Service.
Points chase: After Sharon: 1. Kyle Hardy (1,172); 2. Joe Martin (1,097); 3. Jeremy Wonderling (1,083: 4. Michael Duritsky (1,026); 5. J.J. Mazur (943).
