What won the race: Driving the final 15 circuits with a busted power steering line, polesitter Anthony Sanders of Spartanburg, S.C., led all 40 laps of the second annual Ed Gibbons Memorial at Sumter Speedway on Saturday, earning his first career feature victory with the Carolina Clash Super Late Model Series while collecting $5,007.
Quotable: “To be honest at 12 o’clock today I wasn’t even sure if I was coming to this place,” Sanders said. “This ain’t my best racetrack. I said, ‘The hell with it. Let’s go down there and run.’ It’s a fun little track I just wish it could be a little more multigroove. Lapped traffic was kinda hard to pass here. I knew if we could just get out front and kinda ride and set the pace we’d be alright. I was doing great until the power steering went out. After that it was just a handful.”
Key notes: It was Sanders' second win of the season. He won an Ultimate Southeast race at Cherokee in May. ... He Taking second place on the lap 30 restart, Steve Banal of Rock Hill, S.C., held on for the runner-up position, 0.834 seconds behind Sanders. ... Carolina Clash Series point leader Michael Brown of Lancaster, S.C., battled with Banal throughout the race, but settled for third. ... Fourteenth-starting Josh Richeson of North Wilkesboro, N.C., advanced nine positions and finished fifth. ... Zach Cox of Lumberton, N.C., started 22nd and finished 12th. ... Entering Saturday seeking his third series win of the season, Brett Hamm of Newberry, S.C., finished 18th after being involved in a six-car crash on lap 15, an incident which required over 20 minutes of cleanup. ... Saturday's feature was slowed was slowed by seven separate incidents and lasted 55 minutes, with 11 competitors completing all 40 laps. ... The race honored the late Hall of Famer from South Carolina who died in 2009 from injuries sustained in a car accident at the age of 46.
