Bobby Pierce takes the checkers for his third straight victory.
What won the race: Winning his seventh series race of 2022 and third in a row, an unchallenged Bobby Pierce of Oakwood, Ill., led all 40 laps from his pole position Thursday at Shadyhill Speedway. Pierce matched his father Bob, a winner 22 years earlier at Shadyhill, for a $5,000 payday in winning by 1.947 seconds over 15-year-old Tristan Chamberlain.
Quotable: "The got on top side there early on and it was it was pretty fun for a few laps, but I knew it was a matter of time for it started to move down," Pierce said. "Really, the car was great and I think we're probably the best car, but we got lucky with the draw and it helped out that that first (attempted) start didn't go, because (Chad Finley) had got me on the outside and I was probably gonna have to race him there for a while if I was going to try to pass him. So I got that second start going and I made sure to get to the top as soon as I could and got it done."
Key notes: Pierce has 47 career series victories. ... Fourteen of 22 starters completed 40 laps. ... Four cautions slowed the action (Thomas Hunziker spun on laps one and two; Jeff Roth spun on the third and 26th laps). ... Mick Quin scratched from the feature lineup. ... Indiana native Joe Godsey has won heat races at all three of the tour's Indiana ovals, including Shadyhill. ... Hunziker had a cortisone shot in his right elbow after suffering an injury (he'd previously underwent surgery earlier this year on his left shoulder). ... Mark Voigt's machine went up in smoke with a broken oil pump in the first heat, a race where just five of nine starters were running at the finish; Voigt scratched for the night. ... Among first-time series entrants for 2022 was Tom Smith of Tinley Park, Ill., who previously promoted Kankakee County Speedway (where the series opened a month ago). Smith didn't crack the feature lineup.
On the move: Payton Freeman of Commerce, Ga., started 21st and finished 11th.
Winner's sponsors: Pierce’s Pierce Race Car is sponsored by Hoker Trucking, Allgayer Inc., Rio Grande Waste Services, Mesilla Valley Transportation, Carnaghi Towing & Repair, Extreme Electric, Toyota of Danville, Quality Paint & Body, Base Racing Fuels, Senior Life Insurance and the Vermilion County Bobcats.
Points chase: After Shadyhill: 1. Bobby Pierce (1,352); 2. Brian Shirley (1,085); 3. Jason Feger (1,020); 4. Payton Freeman (980); 5. Joe Godsey (932); 6. Ryan Unzicker (717); 7. Mark Voigt (716) 8. Billy Moyer Jr. (661); 9. Jeff Roth (644); 10. Shannon Babb (617).
