Winner Dale McDowell (17m) took the lead as Dakotah Knuckles (21k) got tangled up with John Henderson.
What won the race: Inheriting the lead when Dakotah Knuckles tangled with a slower car on lap 40, Dale McDowell of Chickamauga, Ga., led the rest of Saturday's 53-lap Schaeffer's Southern Nationals finale at Tazewell Speedway to earn $10,053 and his third tour victory of the season. Cory Hedgecock of Loudon, Tenn., who had a flat tire on the 18th lap, clinched the tour title with his 11th-place finish.
Quotable: “If it’s half as exciting for (spectators) as it is in the car, you guys are golden,” McDowell said in victory lane. “I felt like (Knuckles) had a good short-run car and I hated to see that happen to him. The lapped traffic is … it sucks to lead these things, you know, because you don’t know where to go. I was able to kinda maneuver and obviously if you’re running second you have an advantage because you can go where they’re not.”
Key notes: Outside front-row starter Dakotah Knuckles was in command with 13 laps remaining when he tangled with John Henderson, knocking Knuckles out of the race. ... Dale McDowell inherited the point and led the rest of the way, taking the checkers 1.481 seconds ahead of runner-up Mack McCarter. ... McDowell also won on the tour's first weekend at Wythe Raceway in Rural Retreat, Va., and Volunteer Speedway in Bulls Gap, Tenn. ... Pole-starting Eli Beets, who led laps 1-9 before Knuckles took control, was running third in the late stages but spun on lap 50 after contact with ninth-starting Ricky Weiss, who finished third. ... Tazewell hosted the series for the 18th time.
On the move: Ricky Weiss of Headingley, Manitoba, started ninth and finished third.
Winner's sponsors: McDowell’s Shane McDowell Racing Team Zero Race Car has a Clements Chevrolet engine and sponsorship from E-Z-Go, Cometic Gaskets, Klotz Synthetic Lubricants, Connected Strategy Advisors, Northeastern Fabrication, Fox Racing Shox, Campbell Insulation Specialists, Shackleford Enterprises and Spring-Pro.
