Dillon Brown picks up his Harvey Jones Memorial trophy.
What won the race: Pole-starting Dillon Brown of Gaffney, S.C., led all 50 laps at All-Tech Raceway, winning Saturday's $10,000 Harvey Jones Memorial. Brown's victory is his fourth of the season and his second five-figure payday after topping April's Crate Racin' USA series' return to Rome (Ga.) Speedway.
Quotable: “It got pretty hectic when I could look and see two cars on the outside of me,” Brown said. “That caution with five laps to go ... I sure said, ‘Thank the Lord’ when that one came out. It was hard to get off that bottom with the track conditions, and I was committed to it. When we were all racing for the lead, I could see (Whitener) float out in the corners, and I could see him briefly in the center of turns one and two. It’s just so hard to leave that bottom when the track is like it was tonight.”
Key notes: Fourteenth-starting Clay Harris moved into the runner-up position on lap 47 and finished 1.414 seconds back. ... Series points leader Mark Whitener faded to finish third. ... Defending event winner Hunter Peacock started fifth and finished fourth. ... Ashton Winger advanced four positions and finished sixth. ... Trent Ivey gained four spots and finished ninth. ... Third-running Jeremy Steele drew the race's final caution on lap 45, relegating him to finish 18th. … Saturday’s main event honors Harvey Jones, a Georgia Racing Hall of Famer whose racing career began in 1949; Jones, who died in 2009, raced primarily in the state of Georgia, but his career spanned at many tracks from Macon to the Florida state line. … Saturday's feature was slowed by two incidents and lasted 23 minutes, with 16 competitors completing all 50 laps.
On the move: Mario Gresham of Rome, Ga., started 24th and finished 10th.
Winner's sponsors: Brown’s Longhorn Chassis has a Hendren Racing Engine and is sponsored by Cherokee Landscaping, Pro Fabrication, Trailer Queen, Performance Automotive, Moorhead Bros., RK Designs Fabrication & Technologies, Renegade Fuels, Cruisin’ Thru Grab ‘N Go, Wray’s Wraps, Penske Shocks and Hardison Suspension Technologies.
