McKay Wenger was unhurt after a scary wreck in time trials.
What won the race: Riding the high line around Fairbury Speedway, fifth-starting Frank Heckenast Jr. used a last-lap pass to swing around the outside of Dennis Erb Jr. out of turn four and beat him to the line by 0.202 seconds to win Saturday's $5,000 second annual Bob Harty Memorial. Heckenast Jr. led twice for 12 laps (22-32 and 38), earning his first victory since 2021's $15,000 FALS Frenzy at Fairbury.
Quotable: “I don’t know what happened to Ryan (Unzicker), I hope it had nothing to do with me, cause we’re buddies” Heckenast Jr. said. “It was a hard race to be leading for him, you know, and then I had nothing to lose and top-three are running around the bottom, so I was just feeling the car out (in the high line). That’s how you write it up in your head and it works out about one out of 100 times, so it worked out there.”
Key notes: Committed to the low line, Dennis Erb Jr. led laps 33 through 37 before getting nipped at the line by Heckenast. ... Fourth-starting Mike Mataragas moved into third on lap 36 and rounded-out the podium. ... Fairbury points leader Mike Spatola ran as high as second on lap 22 before fading to finish fourth. ... Fresh off Thursday's $7,500 Herald & Review 100 victory at Macon Speedway, Ryan Unzicker led the first 21 laps from the pole before striking an infield tractor tire and spinning to draw the race's second caution; he finished fifth. ... The third and final caution flew on lap 32 when fourth-running Jason Wagner struck and infield tire and spun. ... McKay Wenger hit the cushion wrong in turn one and flipped heavily during time trials; he wasn't hurt but scratched for the night. ... The event honored Robert “Bob” Harty of Dwight, Ill. Harty, a passionate fan of dirt racing, owned and operated his own auctioneering company for 31 years; he died Sept. 24, 2021, at the age of 59. ... Saturday's feature was slowed by three cautions and lasted 16 minutes, with 12 drivers completing all 38 laps.
On the move: Jake Little of Springfield, Ill., started 14th and finished seventh.
Winner's sponsors: Heckenast’s Rocket Chassis is powered by a Durham Racing Engine and sponsored by JR Hauling, Storage Squares, Petroff Towing, Jim Weber Motorsports, Jay Morris Construction, Capital Capsigns and Route 66 Dirt Oval.
