Mike Marlar waves the checkers after the second semifeature.
What won the race: Tenth-starting Mike Marlar of Winfield, Tenn., overtook Ricky Thornton Jr. at the perfect time entering turn three on lap 16 and survived three late-race restarts to win Thursday's second $5,000 semifeature at Florence Speedway. Marlar recorded his second victory of the month in Thursday's preliminary event for Saturday's 41st annual Sunoco North-South 100 presented by Lucas Oil.
Quotable: “I wish I did (know that I had a car capable of winning from 10th), but with this kind of competition you just never know,” Marlar said. “Sometimes it goes and sometimes it don’t, today it did. I started off really good in our heat, I was a little bit off, we stayed pretty close to the gameplan there and it came back to life for the feature. Definitely cool to win, you know, a tough field. When everyone is here it’s a big race and it’s awesome to win these.”
Key notes: Sixth-starting Kyle Bronson used an inside move out of turn four to claim the runner-up position on the last lap, finishing 2.510 seconds back. ... Brandon Overton held second from a lap-17 restart until making slight contact with the turn-four wall on the final lap, allowing Bronson to edge him at the line. He settled for third. ... Eighth-starting Jonathan Davenport gained a couple of spots in the final laps, finishing fourth. ... Tim McCreadie and Dale McDowell each advanced eight positions, finishing seventh and ninth. ... Hudson O'Neal led the first 12 laps from the pole before a flat left rear tire brought him under caution to change it; O'Neal rebounded to finish 10th. ... Ricky Thornton Jr. inherited the lead on the lap-13 restart and led laps 14 and 15 before getting too high entering turn three and making contact with the wall, handing the lead to Marlar; Thornton pitted under caution a lap later with a flat right-rear tire, then spun on the ensuing restart attempt to draw the race's third yellow. ... Kyle Strickler drew two cautions (flat left rear tire on lap 16 and a solo spin from 16th on lap 21) before finishing 21st. ... Jason Jameson caused the first yellow with a flat left rear on lap 12, just as O'Neal discovered his flat; Jameson called it a night. ... Thursday's second 25-lap semifeature lasted 18 minutes with 23 drivers completing the distance and running at the finish.
On the move: Winner Mike Marlar of Winfield, Tenn., started 10th.
Winner's sponsors: Marlar’s Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Clements Racing Engine and carries sponsorship from Delk Equipment, Petroff Towing, Tri-Rivers Enterprise (Mark and Kim Dotson), Can-Am Auto Salvage, Auto Parts 4 Less, Mesilla Valley Transportation, Capital Capsigns, VP Racing Fuels, Stanley Best Heating & Air, Midwest Sheet Metal and Bilstein.
