What won the race: Third-starting Tyler Peterson of Hickson, N.D., powered around the outside of Jeff Massingill to regain the lead for good on lap 13 and paced the final 28 circuits to win Saturday's $2,000 Structural Buildings WISSOTA Challenge Series stop at Ogilvie Raceway. Peterson led twice for 38 laps (2-11, 13-40) en route to his third career series victory in as many starts.
Quotable: “It’s awesome man, when we got into the Late Model deal, I didn’t think we’d win a race this year,” Peterson said. “It’s been absolutely incredible. The Challenge Series is awesome, I hope next year we can follow the whole thing. I wasn’t prepared to even run this many Late Model races and then they started clicking. Yeah $7,000 (total race winnings with the series) that’ll help buy us some tires and keeps us going for sure.”
Key notes: It's Peterson's second triumph of the weekend after topping Friday's local show at I-94 EMR Speedway. ... Tenth-starting Massingill, of Keewatin, Minn., steadily moved forward around the extreme low line and led lap 12 before giving way to Peterson and finishing 2.117 seconds back. ... Ryan Mikkelson followed suit in running the bottom, improving three positions and finishing third. ... Series points leader and second-starting Pat Doar faded to finish fourth. … Andy Jones finished fifth and clinched the local track title, the first time Ogilvie has crowned a Late Model champion. ... Dave Mass advanced seven positions and finished sixth. ... Jake Redetzke gained five spots and finished seventh. ... Don Shaw led the first lap from the pole before being overtaken by Peterson and retiring on lap 20. ... The race's longest stoppage came on lap 27 when a 10-minute red flag was needed to repair the turn-two fence following a wall scrape. ... Saturday's 40-lap feature was slowed by three separate incidents and lasted 23 minutes, with 14 competitors completing the entire distance and 16 running at the finish. ... The WISSOTA Challenge Series concludes its weekend doubleheader with Sunday's $5,000-to-win stop at Granite City (Minn.) Motor Park.
On the move: Daniel Bargender of Menomonie, Wis., started 22nd and finished ninth.
Winner's sponsors: Peterson’s Rocket Chassis is powered by a Corky Thomas Race Engine and carries sponsorship from Enclave, Quick-Lift, TP Fabricating, AllFab Railings & Metalworks, Powdercoat Specialists and Slider Shots Media.
