Mike Palasini Jr. and his supporters in victory lane at Greenville.
What won the race: Taking the point from early leader Brian Rickman with an inside move on a lap-16 restart, second-starting Mike Palasini Jr. of Leland, Miss., paced the final 35 circuits to win Saturday's $10,000 17th annual Gumbo Nationals at Greenville Speedway. With his second victory in as many nights, Palasini swept the Gumbo Nationals and collected more than $15,000 across both nights of action.
Quotable: “This is unreal, I’ve been waiting to win this one for a lot of years now,” Palasini said. “I didn’t know where I done got to (lapping through the field), but I started seeing the cars I was catching, I said ‘I gotta be stretched out pretty good’. The car was unbelievable and hats off, unbelievable race track tonight. In my opinion (it was) a better track tonight, it had some moisture around the bottom a little bit, you could keep a little more momentum and move around a little bit more tonight.”
Key notes: Rickman, of Columbus, Miss., led the opening 15 laps from the pole before being overtaken by Palasini and finishing a distant runner-up; Rickman was nearly lapped and the only other driver to complete all 50 laps. ... Defending Gumbo Nationals winner, seventh-starting Neil Baggett overcame a lap-16 spin to finish third; the lap-16 incident drew the race's third caution and involved David Breazeale, as the two battled for third place. Breazeale spun into the infield and hit an abandoned 4-cylinder car, ending his night. ... Eleventh-starting Jarret Stuckey overcame a spin from fourth on lap 19 and completed the top five. ... Brandon Ball improved four positions and finished sixth. ... Rick Rickman ran as high as third before pulling off on lap 21. ... Saturday's 41-minute main event was slowed by six cautions and had 10 drivers running at the finish. … Palasini joins Baggett (2022), Logan Martin (’21), Billy Moyer (’20), Brian Rickman (’19 and ’17), Kyle Strickler (’18), Tyler Erb (’16), Timothy Culp (’14 and ‘15) and Bub McCool (’07 and ’11-’13) as event winners. … The Gumbo Nationals was contested unsanctioned for the first time since 2010 after carrying sanctioning from the Comp Cams Super Dirt Series, Mississippi State Championship Challenge Series and the PRO Dirt Car Series through the years.
On the move: Kyle Beard of Trumann, Ark., started 15th and finished fourth.
Winner's sponsors: Palasini’s Doug Showah-owned Bob Pierce Race Car is powered by a Pro Power Racing Engine and carries sponsorship from Palasini Motorsports, The Tint Man, M&D Aviation, Palasini Farms, Hanos Dirt Works, Inc., L&L Flying Service, Fratesi Grocery, Greenville Steel Sales, Monster Mosquito Control, Pro Green Lawn Care, LLC, Hoosier Tire and HPG Wraps.
