Cody Overton heads for a $5,000 SBLMS victory at Eldora Speedway.
What won the race: Overcoming a challenge from K.C. Burdette on a late-race restart, third-starting Cody Overton of Evans, Ga., led all but one lap en route to winning Sunday's $5,000 Steel Block World Championship at Eldora Speedway. Overton took the checkers by 0.546 of a second over Burdette to claim his first career Steel Block Late Model Series victory.
Quotable: “I wanted (the race) to be over with 15 (laps) to go,” Overton said. “Man, (the engine) started running really rough and I knew I was in trouble and I kept telling them, I’m like ‘this thing is gonna break any minute’. I really didn’t mean to get into (K.C. Burdette), but hell it’s a win at Eldora, what are you gonna do?”
Key notes: The second-starting Burdette, of Parkersburg, W.Va., utilized the lap-24 restart to lead his only lap of the day before Overton executed a textbook crossover move at turn-two exit on the final lap and sped to the win. ... Taylor Puckett also took advantage of the lap-24 restart to complete the podium. ... Zach Milbee started sixth and finished fifth to clinch the 2023 series championship, his second-straight and third in the tour's four-year history. ... Dustin Carter improved nine positions and finished sixth. ... Devin Shiels gained seven spots and finished seventh. ... Shaun Lawton started 24th and finished 10th. ... Daniel Hill ran as high as third on lap 15 before pulling off on lap 24. ... Twentieth-starting Corey DeLancey drew the race's fourth yellow on lap 17 with a flat right-rear while running second; DeLancey rebounded to finish eighth after changing the flat. ... Tucker Anderson was showing heavy smoke from the runner-up spot and pulled off under the third caution on lap 13. ... Jonathan Brauns slowed from second on lap five with a broken driveshaft. ... Second-running Dillan Stake's day ended on lap three when his right-front nose piece was torn off by the track surface. ... Sunday's feature was slowed by five cautions and lasted 30 minutes, with 14 drivers completing 25 laps.
On the move: Taylor Puckett of Greer, S.C., started 22nd and finished third; Derek Rogers of Spelter, W.Va., started 23rd and finished fourth.
