Trent Ivey repeated at the World Short Track Championship.
What won the race: Stalking race-long leader Dennis Franklin over the final 10 laps, seventh-starting Trent Ivey of Union, S.C., used an inside move exiting turn four to beat Franklin to the checkers by 0.320 of a second to win Saturday's $4,000 604 Crate Late Model feature at the Dirt Track at Charlotte. Ivey secured his second straight World Short Track Championship triumph.
Quotable: “Great people (helped put me in victory lane), everybody here is giving me the best race car in the country right now,” Ivey said. “Special thanks to (car owner) Gary (Shurling), Wyatt (Hardison), Randall (Brewster) and my family. Noah, he had an accident Thursday, I’m sure everybody’s seen it, happy he’s okay and just happy to be back here.”
Key notes: The pole-starting Franklin, of Gaffney, S.C., settled for a runner-up finish after leading the first 29 laps. ... Three-time Mid-East 604 Crate Late Model winner this season, Jeremy Steele ran as high as second on lap 19 before giving way to Ivey on the lap-21 restart and finished third. ... John Ruggiero Jr. ran second to Franklin for the first half of the race before fading to finish fourth. ... Logan Roberson improved seven positions and completed the top five. ... After winning Thursday's 15-lap invitational and one of Friday's six-lap heat races, Dillon Brown finished sixth. ... Third-running Benji Hicks hopped the turn-two cushion on a late restart and slipped to seventh. ... Dalton Jacobs gained eight spots and finished 15th, clinching the 2023 Mid-East 604 title. ... Ricky Greene brought out the first caution on lap two when he spun from 10th, collecting Colton Trouille and ending their nights. ... The second yellow flew on lap 12 when Mike Franklin slowed from 22nd before pulling off. ... The third caution was displayed on lap 18 for a solo-spin by 18th-running Matthew Brocato. ... Travis Steele spun from 14th and drew the final stoppage on lap 20; Steele was able to continue, but finished one lap down in 22nd. ... Saturday's 16-minute feature saw 21 drivers complete 30 laps.
