Brandon Overton (76) ducks underneath Dale McDowell (17M) to make a last-lap pass for the win at I-75.
What won the race: Pulling off a dramatic final-circuit pass, Brandon Overton of Evans, Ga., slid underneath fellow Georgian Dale McDowell to capture Friday night’s 53-lap Schaeffer’s Spring Nationals feature at I-75 Speedway. Overton edged McDowell, who had led since the third lap, by 0.296 of a second for the $10,053 top prize.
Quotable: “Honestly, I was just gonna have to go wherever Dale didn’t,” Overton said. “I caught him … and I knew I had my tires way too hot so I just kind of rode around and let ‘em cool down. Then I moved back around the top and it was sticking again so I was like, ‘All right, this is the last time. I gotta go get him.’”
Key notes: Overton’s third overall victory of 2024 was the 10th of his career in Spring Nationals action. It was his first on the tour since April 1, 2023, at East Alabama Motor Speedway. … Overton's car was equipped with American Racer tires. ... McDowell, who overtook polesitting teenager Trey Mills for the lead on lap three, allowed Overton to slip inside him rounding turns one and two amid slower traffic on the last circuit. Overton remained alongside McDowell down the backstretch and through turns three and four and won the drag race to the finish line. … Sam Seawright advanced from the 10th starting spot to third by lap 32 and stayed in the position to the finish driving a Troy Baird-owned Longhorn. … Mills settled for a fifth-place finish after leading laps 1-2. ... Jimmy Owens was slated to start third but dropped to the rear because mechanical trouble forced him to a backup car. He retired after four laps. ... Hudson O'Neal piloted Kevin Rumley's Longhorn car to a seventh-place finish. ... Stormy Scott drew a caution on lap 14 when he slowed running fourth. ... Cory Hedgecock hopped the turn-three cushion and drew a caution during the first heat race, then tangled with a competitor on the ensuing restart in an incident that saw him require a tow back to the pits. His night was over due to the damage. … Friday marked the third time I-75 has hosted a Spring Nationals event.
On the move: Donald McIntosh of Dawsonville, Ga., started 22nd and finished eighth.
