Dustin Sorensen picked up $3,000 at Mississippi Thunder.
What won the race: Powering around the outside of early pacesetter Tyler Bruening on lap eight, third-starting Dustin Sorensen of Rochester, Minn., never looked back en route to winning Friday's $3,000 Stars and Stripes 40 at Mississippi Thunder Speedway. Sorensen grabbed his third career Wabam Dirt Kings Tour victory and his first since Aug. 19, 2023, at Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn.
Quotable: “I went with a softer tire than I think most people did and I think it paid off real early there,” Sorensen said. “(Tyler Bruening) was going a little harder than I wanted to at the start, but I figured if I could keep it close, once we got to lapped traffic .. he might get held up and it worked out just that way.”
Key notes: Bruening, of Decorah, Iowa, faded to finish third after pacing the opening seven laps from the pole. ... Fourth-starting Jake Timm, chasing his fifth career Dirt Kings Tour victory at MTS, finished 1.689 seconds behind Sorensen. ... Chad Mahder improved five positions and placed eighth. ... The race's lone stoppage came on lap 12 when Brett Swedberg slowed to a stop. He was unable to continue. ... The Stars and Stripes 40 lasted 19 minutes, with eight drivers completing the distance and 17 running at the checkers.
On the move: Jake Redetzke of Eau Claire, Wis., started 18th and finished seventh.
Winner's sponsors: Sorensen’s Longhorn Chassis by DSR carries sponsorship from J&S Repair, Heavy Hitch, Altenburg Construction - Slat Replacement Professionals, Paulson Rock Products and Stussy Construction, Rochester Chevrolet, CBR Drilling, 63 Club, GunShepherd.com, Bilstein Shocks and Yaggy Specialized Truck Service.
