Team owner G.R. Smith hugs winner Max McLaughlin in Quincy, Ill.
What won the race: Overtaking Daryn Klein early and fending off a late-race challenge from Jason Feger, high-running Max McLaughlin of Mooresville, N.C., won Wednesday's 30-lap DIRTcar Summer Nationals stop at Adams County Speedway. The fourth-starting McLaughlin led 25 laps — including the final 24 — for a $5,000 payday, the first of his career on the Midwestern tour. McLaughlin snapped Tyler Erb's 4-for-4 streak to open the series as Erb ran into trouble in heat action. The series points leader made a 14th-to-seventh charge in the feature.
Quotable: “The car was really good, we definitely had a winning car. When you get the lead that early and the whole track starts to latch down like that, you really don’t know where to go,” McLaughlin said. “I really haven’t ran in the rubber in a Late Model before, so it was kinda new to me trying to figure out how to make it turn and not overdrive. I knew I had to keep it straight, I saw (Jason Feger) under me at the end and I knew I had to protect the bottom.”
Key notes: McLaughlin, racing with a potentially broken left index finger injured when he got into the fence Friday at Tri-City Speedway, became just the second North Carolina driver to win on the Hell Tour and first since Ray Cook of Brasstown, N.C., was victorious on July 1, 2011, at Paducah (Ky.) International Raceway.. ... The previous first-time series winner was Kyle Moore, who won last season's finale at Wayne County Speedway in Orrville, Ohio. ... The third-starting Feger, of Bloomington, Ill., showed his nose inside McLaughlin in the closing laps before settling for second, 0.479 of a second back. ... The remainder of the top-five finishers all matched or set their best career finish in a Summer Nationals event, led by eighth-starting Clay Stuckey who placed third, his career best. ... Pole-starting Daryn Klein led five laps (1-4, 6) before slipping to fourth, his best series run. ... Will Roland matched his best career effort (Friday at Tri-City) in fifth. ... Tyler Erb's quest for five straight series wins became infinitely harder when he was spun while leading the third heat race. Erb rebounded to finish seventh in the non-stop 30-lapper. ... Garrett Smith held the fourth position for the first handful of laps before pulling off. ... The main event lasted nine minutes, with 17 drivers completing the distance. ... Doug Tye and Carson Brown made contact during the consolation, sending Tye upside down and over in one complete rotation before landing on his wheels. He was unhurt, but unable to continue.
On the move: Tyler Erb of New Waverly, Texas, started 14th and finished seventh.
Winner's sponsors: McLaughlin’s Team 22 Inc. Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Cornett Engine and carries sponsorship from Mohawk Northeast, Victory Circle Auto Sales, Gambler Transport, Brickhouse Tavern, Armor Security, R.J.’s Excavating, Collins Signs, Sterling Lubricants and Bilstein Shocks.
Points chase: Overall after Quincy: 1. Tyler Erb (372); 2. Jason Feger (320); 3. Kye Blight (250); 4. Dillon McCowan (246); 5. Max McLaughlin (234).

Both drivers tagged the field, with Erb finishing fourth and Clem taking fifth. Kye Blight rebounded to finish third after a lap-seven mishap when Austin Howes slowed abruptly in front of him, sending him spinning to avoid.
