What won the race: Grabbing control as mid-race leader Hayden Cardwell slipped in turn two, sixth-starting Ricky Weiss of Headingley, Manitoba, paced the final nine laps and overcame a lap-69 restart melee to win Saturday's 13th annual J.T. Kerr Memorial at 411 Motor Speedway. Weiss's $10,000 victory his his second straight Rogers-Dabbs Crate Racin' USA Series triumph and the third of his career, all coming this season.
Quotable: “What a hell of a weekend, just proud of my guys. We’ve been working so hard in the shop the last month .. hell, all year, really,” Weiss said. “The longer the races, the better we seem to be. (Hayden Cardwell) definitely made it interesting with a couple (laps) to go .. I don’t know, I think he didn’t expect me to try and go to the bottom and he just tried to muscle his way in there.”
Key notes: Weiss swept both CRUSA weekend events, earning more than $20,000 after leading the final 11 circuits of Friday's $10,000 opener at Tazewell (Tenn.) Speedway. ... The second-starting Cardwell, of Knoxville, Tenn., led 32 laps (31-62) before giving way to Weiss in the late going. Cardwell then charged inside of Weiss on the lap-69 restart attempt, making contact and causing both of them to spin in front of the field, collecting Jason Welshan, Skylar Marlar and Mack McCarter. The race's sixth and final caution was pinned on Cardwell who opted to call it a night, along with Welshan and McCarter. ... Marlar continued to finish seventh. ... Welshan, of Maryville, Tenn., led the opening 30 laps from the pole before being overtaken by Cardwell and Weiss, then retiring with heavy nose damage following the lap-69 melee. ... Fourth-starting Tyler Millwood grabbed second on the final restart and trailed Weiss the last two laps, crossing the line 1.457 seconds back. ... Matt Henderson improved five spots and completed the top-five finishers. ... Defending event winner Cory Hedgecock spun on lap 11 to bring out the first caution and pulled straight to the pits. ... The event honored the former owner of J.T. Kerr Racing Equipment who developed the Stinger Chassis. Kerr died in 2011 at the age of 81. ... Saturday's main event lasted 54 minutes with nine drivers completing 71 laps and 13 running at the finish.
On the move: Addison Cardwell of Knoxville, Tenn., started 17th and finished ninth.
