Garrett Alberson celebrates at Farmer City Raceway.
What won the race: Leading all 40 laps from outside the front row, Garrett Alberson of Las Cruces, N.M., turned back challenges from Tanner English en route to his first career DIRTcar Summer Nationals victory with a $10,000 payday at Farmer City Raceway. Alberson drove his Illinois-based Roberts Motorsports No. 58 to the checkers 0.863 of a second ahead of Shannon Babb with the pole-starting English finishing third.
Quotable: "I knew with (Shannon) Babb and those guys right there, it was gonna be tough," Alberson said. "I had a hard right-rear (tire), so I think I was a little better making momentum. (The crew was) signaling me down, but I knew I wasn't that great at launching (off the corners on the inside) so I needed to kind of keep my speed up, keep that right-rear hot. So I kind of made a little hybrid line there at the end to kind of get it done."
Key notes: Alberson notched his first DIRTcar Summer Nationals victory, but it's the second for the Roberts Motorsports team as Jeremiah Hurst won a 2020 makeup event at Peoria (Ill.) Speedway. ... Fast qualifier Donny Walden started third and contended early before retiring before halfway while running eighth. ... Eleven drivers finished 40 laps with Ashton Winger giving up fifth on the last lap to finish as the last car on the lead lap. ... Two cautions slowed the action, including on the 32nd lap when sixth-running Jason Feger shredded a left-rear tire after making contact with Tyler Erb heading into turn three. Feger pitted for a new wheel and tire and returned. ... The first caution came for a called-back start at the initial green.
On the move: Tyler Erb of New Waverly, Texas, started 11th and finished fourth.
Winner's sponsors: Alberson's Roberts Motorsports Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Clements Racing Engine and sponsored by Mesilla Valley Transportation, Done Right TV, Bill's Sport Shop, Roemer Machine & Welding, Sims Family Racing, Capitol Screen Company, Nutrien Ag Solutions, Mitchell Ranch, J. Craig's Tile, Arbor Autoworks, McGinley Construction, Browning Auto Parts, American Document Services, Sunoco Race Fuels, Fastshafts, Swift Springs, Bilstein Shocks and Midwest Sheet Metal.
Points chase: Week 3 points after Farmer City: T1. Ashton Winger (188); T1. Tyler Erb (188); 3. Jason Feger (186); 4. Tyler Clem (181); 5. Dillon McCowan (176). Overall points after Farmer City: 1.
