Jeremy Steele poses in victory lane after his $8,050 Crate Late Model win at Volunteer Speedway.
What won the race: Racing in front for all but the race’s first circuit, Jeremy Steele of York, S.C., recorded the biggest victory of his career in Saturday night’s 50-lap 604 Crate Late Model feature at Volunteer Speedway. He turned back a mid-race challenge from Travis Fultz and went on to beat Ricky Weiss by 1.840 seconds for the $8,050 top prize.
Quotable: “It’s outrageous to come out and outrun these local guys,” Steele said. “You got Hedgecock and McCarter and Ricky (Weiss) and them. That’s tough guys to outrun, especially when you’re right here in their backyard. But I had a really good car. Lapped traffic was a little treacherous — you just had to go and hope for the best. I hated to see that caution with five to go, but it showed we had a good car because we could stay out front.”
Key notes: The second-starting Steele overtook the polesitting Fultz for the lead on lap two and never looked back as he earned his second special-event triumph at Volunteer over the past year. He previously scored a $5,000 win last July in an American All-Star Series Crate race. … Coming off a pair of $10,000 CRUSA 604 victories last weekend in Tennessee, Weiss shot past Fultz into second on a lap-45 restart but couldn’t draw close enough to challenge Steele over the final circuits. … Cory Hedgecock also passed Fultz following the late restart and finished third as Fultz settled for fourth. … Skylar Marlar completed the top five after grabbing fifth from Randy Weaver on lap 42. … The race’s only caution flag flew on lap 45 when Allen Styck slowed. … The race was run as the undercard to the Volunteer 50 Super Late Model event that saw Dale McDowell of Chickamauga, Ga., pocket $50,050.
On the move: Cory Hedgecock of Loudon, Tenn., started ninth and finished third.
