Ashton Winger led all the way for a $10,000 victory.
What won the race: Surviving multiple late-race restarts, Ashton Winger of Hampton, Ga., secured a commanding green-to-checkered victory in Saturday's 40-lap 27th annual Birthday Race at Oakshade Raceway. Winger's $10,000 victory is his 14th-career with the DIRTcar Summer Nationals and his second of the season — his first since June 25 at Springfield (Mo.) Raceway.
Quotable: “It’s really hard not to get emotional, this is my grandpa’s birthday and we lost him a little over 10 years ago .. he was definitely riding with us tonight,” Winger said. “I miss him like crazy, I wanna say it to my mama back home, my Aunt Rhonda, my cousins, my grandma .. I love you guys, I wish I was there, I wish y’all were here. I’m just really blessed, Jeff Matthews has done so much for me and we’ve, honestly, had a really rough year. Everybody that puts a hand in on this deal, like I said I’m a little broke up, but I’m really thankful for everything.”
Key notes: Winger notched his second straight Birthday Race triumph and the third of his career (2021). ... Third-starting Tyler Erb grabbed the runner-up spot on a lap-eight restart and trailed Winger the rest of the way, taking the checkers 2.484 seconds back. ... Sixth-starting Devin Shiels prevailed to finish third after a lap-33 tangle with Rusty Schlenk that sent Schlenk spinning in front of the field, collecting Dillon McCowan, Jake Rendel and Wil Herrington. Schlenk waited for Shiels to pull back around before driving alongside and making contact until they both stopped on the backstretch; Schlenk then got out and physically confronted Shiels as he was still strapped in his car before being apprehended by track security. He was credited with 14th. McCowan continued for only a few more laps before pulling off. Rendel rebounded for his best series finish in fourth, with Herrington recovering to sixth. ... Carter Schlenk, Rusty's teenage son, started fifth and kept pace with the leaders until spinning in turn one on a lap-eight restart attempt. He was running 15th when he pulled off on lap 31. ... The main event was slowed by five cautions and lasted 27 minutes, with 10 competitors completing the distance.
On the move: Trey Mills of St. Augustine, Fla., started 14th and finished fifth.
Winner's sponsors: Winger’s Jeff Mathews Motorsports Rocket Chassis is powered by an Andy Durham Racing Engine and carries sponsorship from RV Select Inc., CURS, Super K Express, Keyser Manufacturing, Integra Shocks, Angry Elephant Tattoo and Piercing, FK Rod Ends, A-Plus Collision Center, Hoosier Tire, Simpson Race Products, Collins Signs, DirtCarLift.com, VP Race Fuels, CSR Aluminum Fabrication, Boswell Oil and WrapTech.
