Bill Leighton Jr. celebrates his $5,053 victory in Malvern Bank West Series action at Huset's Speedway.
What won the race: Denying J.C. Wyman’s bid to end a four-year victory slump on the Malvern Bank West Series, Bill Leighton Jr. of La Vista, Neb., grabbed the lead on lap 25 and marched on to win Saturday night’s 30-lap feature at Huset’s Speedway. He used the outside lane to assume command and took the $5,053 first-place check by 1.223 seconds over Wyman, who led laps 2-24.
Quotable: “I actually went up there and tried it a little bit earlier and I didn’t think it was very good so I just went back down to the bottom,” Leighton said. “But I really wasn’t gaining anything, and we had that caution and I was like, Well, I gotta try something, because I wasn’t gonna beat ‘em on the bottom, and it stuck and I just kept rolling from there.”
Key notes: Leighton, who was leading Friday’s Malvern West feature at Huset’s when he couldn’t avoid a car that stalled in front of him and cut a tire, recorded his second Malvern West win of 2024 and the 22nd of his career. … Wyman settled for a runner-up finish as he fell short of his first victory on the tour since June 12, 2020, at I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Neb. … Kyle Berck nosed out Leighton for second place on lap 21 but couldn’t pull ahead and finished third. … Friday-night winner Justin Zeitner placed fourth. ... Jason Hahne led the first lap but faded to seventh in the finishing order. ... The race’s first of three caution flags flew on lap four when Jake Bridge clipped Gabe Umbarger’s slowing car on the backstretch. … Other slowdowns came for Chris Spieker on lap 20 and a Brian Kosiski/Darrel DeFrance tangle between turns three and four on lap 23. ... The event was run on the undercard of the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series-sanctioned Silver Dollar Nationals finale.
On the move: Dylan Sillman of Alvo, Neb., started 14th and finished ninth.
