What won the race: Overtaking Kaede Loudy with an inside move exiting turn two on lap 21, fourth-starting Camaron Marlar of Winfield, Tenn., led the rest of the 40-lapper Saturday in the 10th annual Butch Shay Memorial at Richmond Raceway. Marlar's $7,500 Ultimate Heart of America Series victory marked the second of his career and his second of the month after earning $5,000 on July 5 at Thunder Mountain Speedway in Corbin, Ky.
Quotable: “I could’ve ran 10th. As long as I finished I would’ve been happy, cause I ain’t finished a race here in like five or six years,” Marlar said. “The car was good. It got dicey especially in lapped traffic man, it was sketchy, but it was fun. Good job to Kaede Loudy there. He’s really been running good and I really didn’t want to pass him for the lead. I was kinda cheerin’ for him a little bit.”
Key notes: Marlar clinches a guaranteed starting position in Aug. 17's $12,059-to-win Butterball Wooldridge Memorial at Richmond. ... Second-starting Loudy, of Rogersville, Tenn., led the opening 20 laps before giving way to Marlar and eventually James Rice, leaving him to settle for third. Loudy nearly lost the lead to Marlar initially on lap 14 when Larry Martin Jr. slowed to a stop in front of him, but the resulting caution negated the move. ... Pole-starting Rice grabbed the runner-up spot on a lap-33 restart and trailed Marlar the final eight laps, taking the checkers 2.199 seconds back. ... Ricky Weiss ran as high as second for laps 14-17 before slipping to fourth in the finishing order. ... Series points leader Dustin Linville struggled to a 12th-place finish. ... Jody Adkins spun to draw the race's third and final caution on lap 38. ... Garet McCloud slowed to cause the second stoppage on lap 33. ... The event honored Butch Shay, a racing legend in the Kentucky area. ... The feature lasted 26 minutes, with 16 competitors completing the distance and 20 running at the finish. ... Slated to roll off sixth in the feature, Josh Rice scratched with a blown head gasket.
On the move: Dalton Brown of Crab Orchard, Ky., started 16th and finished ninth.
Winner's sponsors: Marlar’s Greg and Lisa Curl-owned Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Clements Racing Engine and carries sponsorship from Curl Properties, Marlar Auto Mart, Mac Metal Sales & Trusses, Extreme Flooring, Wayne Bowen, Platinum Designs, XS Power and Bilstein Shocks.
