Shane Sabraski collected his richest career payday at ABC Raceway.
What won the race: Grabbing the lead for good on lap 35, third-starting Shane Sabraski of Rice, Minn., collected one of WISSOTA Late Model racing's richest-ever purses Saturday at ABC Raceway with a career-richest $20,444 victory on the Structural Buildings WISSOTA Challenge Series. Cole Searing made a late high-side bid that fell short as Sabraski notched the 12th Late Model victory of his rookie season in the division.
Quotable: "We came out in hot laps tonight and I thought, 'Damn, I'm not good here.' ... we played with the car yesterday and thought we had it messed up, but kind of put it all back and it was really good," Sabraski said, adding that he didn't expect to win against a potent front row. "Especially with Cole (Searing) and Tyler (Peterson) starting ahead of me tonight. All year long those guys have been just dominant."
Key notes: Sabraski, who two weeks earlier had a mild heart attack, also captured the modified portion of the XR Northern Storm finale for a night's payout of $35,888 total. .... The event was the richest payout in track history. ... Outside front-row starter Cole Searing led laps 1-10 and 12-34; his runner-up finish catapults him back into the series points lead. ... Shane Sabraski led the 11th lap but Searing went right back ahead. ... Polesitter Tyler Peterson, who won the first two XR Northern Storm events, faded to fifth. ... Three cautions slowed the action. ... The first start was called back because of a pileup in turn two involving at least 10 cars, eliminating Johnny Broking, Derek Vesel and Travis Budisalovich. ... A second yellow appeared for a slowing Dave Flynn on the second lap. ... Jeff Massingill stopped in turn four for a lap-four caution. ... The event honors Tanner Byholm, the 25-year-old modified racer of Glidden, Wis., who died in a 2021 plane accident.
On the move: Kevin Burdick of Proctor, Minn., started 13th and finished fourth.
Winner's sponsors: Sabraski's Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Vic Hill Racing Engine and sponsored by West Metro Buick-GMC, QA1 Racing Shocks, Speedwerx Custom Exhaust and Joe Signs.
Points chase: After ABC: 1. Cole Searing (1,406); 2. Tyler Peterson (1,400) 3. Shane Sabraski (1,333); 4. Jeff Provinzino (1,232); 5. Ryan Mikkelson (1,231).
