What won the race: Muscling his way by race-long leader Blake Craft on a lap-25 restart, eighth-starting Mark Whitener of Middleburg, Fla., led the rest of Saturday's 40-lap unsanctioned Limited Late Model portion of the 52nd annual Alabama State Championship at East Alabama Motor Speedway. Whitener's 10th overall victory of the season paid $7,500.
Quotable: “I knew Dusty (Jones) was really, really good. I knew I had to give whatever it had,” Whitener said. “I got into (Blake Craft) a little bit, I was gonna do a slider on him and he turned left, not his fault, it was mine. I apologize to him, but I know it ain’t gonna do no good, cause I’m up here in victory lane and he ain’t.”
Key notes: Third-starting Blake Craft led the opening 24 laps before Whitener's turn-one slider caught Craft's left-front tire, forcing him up the track and allowing Whitener and Dusty Jones to get by. ... Jones trailed Whitener the final 16 laps and finished 0.989 of a second back, while Craft settled for third. ... Chad Wallace improved 11 positions and rounded out the top five. ... Ray Cook made a rare start behind the wheel, advancing 16 spots to finish eighth. ... Chad Wallace and Chris McKeehan tangled while battling for sixth on a lap-34 restart attempt, the resulting contact sending McKeehan spinning to draw the race's sixth and final yellow flag. Wallace continued to finish fifth, while McKeehan called it a night. ... The feature lasted 37 minutes, with 11 starters running at the checkers. ... Brandon Brown scratched.
On the move: Danny Whitten of Gadsden, Ala., started 22nd and finished seventh.
