What won the race: Banjo Duke of Manning, S.C., led all 40 laps from the pole to win Saturday's $5,007 fifth annual Gibbons Memorial at Sumter Speedway, earning his first career Carolina Clash Super Late Model Series victory. Duke captured his first win of any kind since Aug. 21, 2021, a $1,500 Blue Ridge Outlaws stop at Sumter, giving him nine career overall victories there.
Key notes: Duke also topped a $5,000 Ultimate Southeast Series event at Sumter on July 31, 2021, his last major event triumph. ... Ninth-starting Ben Watkins grabbed second on a lap-six restart and trailed Duke the rest of the way, crossing the line 1.179 seconds back. ... Twelfth-starting Christian Thomas took third on a lap-30 restart and completed the podium finishers. ... Points leader Adam Yarbrough, defending Gibbons Memorial winner, advanced seven spots and finished ninth. ... Benji Hicks slowed from third to trigger the race's second and final caution on lap 30. He was unable to continue and credited with 15th. ... A multicar incident caused the first stoppage on lap six, ending the night for Steve Banal, Tony Ayers, David Yandle and Jake Jackson. ... One of the biggest events of the year at Sumter, it honored two of the best drivers in track history, Edward “Slick” Gibbons, the 2001 series champion and “Little Ed” Gibbons. Both drivers enjoyed success at Sumter, before Slick’s sudden passing in the summer of 2020; Little Ed died in 2009. ... The feature lasted 23 minutes, with 14 starters running at the finish.
