What won the race: Sneaking by race-long pacesetter Ryan Missler heading to the white flag, sixth-starting Rusty Schlenk of McClure, Ohio, led the final two circuits to steal Friday's 30-lap De Genzman Memorial at Fremont Speedway. Schlenk grabbed the $5,353 payday by 0.576 of a second over Missler, who settled for a runner-up finish after pacing the first 28 laps.
Quotable: “We gotta race with that spineless (bleep) all year long every year so he’s got one coming after that,” Schlenk said of Missler, who hit Schlenk’s car after the checkered flag. “I was in the damn infield down the back straightaway. I couldn’t get any lower on the race track. It’s not my fault he came out of turn two behind a lapped car and had nowhere to go. He tried running me over and pushing me into a tire and I hit the tire and held onto the lead, so it shows who the better driver was in that aspect.”
Key notes: Battling hard with Missler for the final eight laps, Schlenk surged into the lead amid lapped traffic as lap 29 was scored. Missler took exception to Schlenk’s pass, however, as he drove into the winner’s car after the race in a display of anger. … Schlenk recorded his third career victory at Fremont, which hosted its lone Dirt Late Model event of the 2024 campaign. ... It was Schlenk’s 11th overall win of the season. … Jeff Babcock grabbed third from Devin Shiels on lap 24 and completed the podium finishers. ... The fourth-starting Shiels ran as high as second on lap 15 before giving way to Schlenk and eventually slipping to fourth in the final rundown. … The race was slowed by two cautions and lasted 18 minutes, with 10 starters completing the distance. ... Slated to start 16th, Kolin Schilt scratched after his heat. … The event honored DeWilton “De” Genzman, of Fremont, Ohio, who won three Fremont track championships and 26 career main events before passing away on March 2, 2011, at the age of 73. Genzman was inducted into Fremont’s Hall of Fame in 2010.
On the move: Jeff Babcock of Wayne, Ohio, started 11th and finished third.
