Ricky Thornton Jr. celebrates his third career Volusia victory.
What won the race: Executing a textbook turn-one slider by Tyler Erb on the 12th circuit, polesitter Ricky Thornton Jr. of Chandler, Ariz., led the rest of Tuesday's 25-lap 54th annual Federated DIRTcar Nationals second round at Volusia Speedway Park. Thornton raced to the $7,000 payday 1.943 seconds ahead of Bobby Pierce for his fourth overall victory of the young season and his third career Volusia triumph (2022, '24).
Quotable: “I knew the top was gonna get a better restart and luckily, Bobby (Pierce) picked the bottom for me," Thornton said. "Got a good start, got back to second, was just trying to keep pace with Terbo so that whenever he did slowdown, I’d be able to capitalize on it and was able to do that … (my son) Blayne asks me every year to get us a Gator and every year dad fails, so it’s nice to be able to get him one.”
Key notes: Ricky Thornton Jr. notched his 11th career Georgia-Florida Speedweeks victory and third at Volusia. ... Fourth-starting Bobby Pierce ripped around the outside of Tyler Erb on the final lap, beating him to the line by 0.746 of a second for runner-up honors. ... The second-starting Erb, of New Waverly, Texas, led the opening 11 laps before settling for third. ... Jonathan Davenport challenged Pierce for third near the halfway mark before finishing fourth. ... Cody Overton nearly drew a caution when he got sideways in turn one on the 19th lap, his left-front nosepiece catching Max Blair's right-rear quarterpanel as Blair snuck by on the inside. They both continued with Blair taking eighth and Overton ninth. ... Nick Hoffman, winner of Monday's $7,000 opener, started and finished 10th. ... The 25-lapper was slowed by one caution when Brenden Smith slowed on lap four before retiring; the race lasted 11 minutes, with 18 starters completing the distance. ... Ashton Winger pulled off on lap 17, joining Smith as the race's only other retiree. ... Tanner English scratched. ... Kyle Bronson lost an engine as he led the closing stages of the second heat race. Bronson and team are changing engines in preparation for Wednesday's 20-lap semifeatures in the DIRTcar Nationals third round at Volusia.
On the move: Brian Shirley of Chatham, Ill., started 16th and finished sixth.
Winner's sponsors: Thornton’s Koehler Motorsports Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Cornett Racing Engine and carries sponsorship from Coltman Farms Racing, Hoker Trucking, Capital Waste, Excel Floor Covering, Five Star Metal Buildings, Ultimate Towing, FK Rod Ends, Dynamic Drivelines, Ultrashield Race Products, Sharp Advantage Safety Products, Winning Edge Carburetion, Sunoco Race Fuels, Bilstein Shocks, Midwest Sheet Metal and EMD Wraps.

Mike Marlar led the opening four laps before slipping to third, narrowly edging Tanner English by 0.022 of a second. Fourth-starting Kyle Bronson took the lead from Marlar on the lap-five restart before slowing after losing an engine on the seventh circuit. The race’s lone caution came on the fifth lap when Garrett Alberson spun as he battled English for fifth; Daulton Wilson narrowly avoided contact as Alberson’s car safely rolled to a stop in the turn-three cushion. Alberson continued and finished sixth. … Second-starting Jonathan Davenport used the turn-four cushion to take the lead from Tyler Bruening as they raced toward the white flag, with Davenport leading the final two laps and taking the checkers 0.679 of a second ahead of Bruening, who led the fifth and sixth laps. Fourth-starting Blair Nothdurft prevailed after a back-and-forth battle with Tristan Chamberlain, claiming the third and final transfer spot into the $7,000-to-win feature. The first stoppage came after a stackup on the race’s initial start sent Kyle Bryant and Seth Zacharias spinning, with Bryant’s right-rear making heavy contact with the left front of Zacharias’s backwards-facing machine. Bryant retired, while Zacharias continued to finish eighth. The second yellow flag flew on the fifth lap when race-long leader Chris Madden, slowed with a flat left-rear. Madden stormed back to fifth after changing the tire. … Second-starting Bobby Pierce took control from polesitter Michael Leach on the fifth lap, leading the final four circuits and winning the fourth heat by 0.519 of a second over fourth-starting Nick Hoffman. Ninth-starting Brian Shirley grabbed third on the lap-six restart and completed the podium finishers. Leach faded to sixth on the final lap after pacing the opening four circuits. The lone slowdown came on the sixth lap after Chase Junghans and Dan Ebert made contact as they battled for fourth, with Ebert spinning in turn four and nosing into the inside wall. Ebert did not continue, while Junghans took fourth from Leach on the last lap. … Brandon Overton parlayed a third-to-first move on the opening lap into winning the fifth heat by 2.256 seconds over Ethan Dotson, who fought off challenges from Drake Troutman, who settled for third. Kyle Strickler finished fifth after tagging the field when he changed a tire in staging. The race’s lone caution came out on the fourth lap when fourth-running Jordan Koehler hopped the cushion and slapped the turn-two wall. He did not continue. … Second-starting Cade Dillard slipped around the outside of race-long pacesetter Cody Overton as they raced under the white flag, then beat Overton to the line by 1.068 seconds to win the sixth and final heat race. Brenden Smith overcame an opening lap spin to finish third. Trey Mills tangled with Smith in the opening-lap melee, but continued for a seventh-place finish. … All six heats combined to last just shy of 30 minutes.

Pre-race notes

Night 2 of Federated DIRTcar Nationals Super Late Model action has brought another gorgeous day: partly cloudy skies with an afternoon high in the mid-80s. … Fifty-five cars signed in for Tuesday’s DIRTcar-sanctioned action, but one entered driver, Daniel Adam of Peru, Ill., decided to take the night off and loaded up shortly after the drivers’ meeting. … Drivers racing tonight after sitting out Monday’s opener include Boom Briggs of Bear Lake, Pa., Dillon McCowan of Urbana, Mo., Jimmy Owens of Newport, Tenn., Brenden Smith of Dade City, Fla., and Kyle Strickler of Mooresville, N.C. … Stacy Boles of Clinton, Tenn., is the lone driver who competed on Monday but isn’t back in this evening’s field. The veteran’s Category 5 Chassis was felled by engine trouble on Monday but he had planned to take Tuesday off regardless. … Other drivers opting to skip Tuesday’s program include Hudson O’Neal, Daniel Hilsabeck, Carson Ferguson and Dustin Walker. … Monday feature winner Nick Hoffman of Mooresville, N.C., will shoot for a second consecutive win despite not operating at 100 percent physically. He reported on Facebook that the stomach bug plaguing his kids for the last couple days had struck him, causing him to throw up multiple times this morning. While he’s able to race, he said he’s hoping he “can at least get water to stay down.” … Drake Troutman of Hyndman, Pa., has swapped out Longhorn cars from his Team 22 Inc. stable after a frustrating Monday performance in which he scratched from his B-main. … Daulton Wilson of Fayetteville, N.C., will look to rebound from a miserable Monday outing with a fresh powerplant under his Rattliff Racing machine’s hood after making an engine change. … Derrick Stewart of Ainsworth, Iowa, made extensive repairs to his car for Tuesday’s program after it sustained significant damage in a Monday heat-race bout with the turn-two guardrail. He said he had to employ a Port-A-Power to straighten some frame rails on the car’s front end. “Too much work for vacation,” Stewart quipped.
