Austin Yarbrough celebrates the biggest victory of his career.
What won the race: Inheriting control when early leader Mark Whitener tangled with Trent Ivey on a lap-31 restart, second-starting Austin Yarbrough of Blackshear, Ga., led the rest of Saturday night's 50-lap fifth annual Harvey Jones Memorial at All-Tech Raceway. Yarbrough raced to the $10,000 victory 0.617 of a second ahead of Cody Overton for his second 604 Crate win of the season at All-Tech (April 5) and the most lucrative payday of his young career.
Quotable: “It was a wild race, sometimes you’d rather be lucky than good. I felt like I had a solid, second- … third-place car ya know. I got up on the wheel (in my heat race) and got it done, that gave me a front-row starting spot, that’s what really gave me a chance,” Yarbrough said. “This is amazing, this is really my first big Crate (Late Model) win. I’ve won a $1,500 here and there or whatever, but $10,000 in a Crate car. … If you would’ve told me (I’d win) at the beginning of the night, I’d told you you were lying.”
Key notes: Mark Whitener led the opening 30 laps from the pole before he and Trent Ivey made contact on a lap-31 restart, the resulting contact eliminating both frontrunners, along with Jeremy Steele and Dillon Brown, handing the lead to Yarbrough. Whitener was credited with 20th aboard Auggie Burtram's No. c02 Big Frog Motorsports entry. ... All-Tech 604 points leader Brandon Wells slowed to draw the second stoppage on the ensuing restart. ... Cody Overton passed Ches Chester for second on the lap-32 restart, but never truly challenged Yarbrough over the final 19 laps. ... Chester settled for fourth after Ivedent Lloyd Jr. passed him for third on a lap-49 restart. ... Brenden Smith, former Lucas Oil Series regular, retired on the 14th lap. ... Eighth-running Ty Giles pulled off on the second lap as the race's first retiree. ... The event honored Harvey Jones, a Georgia Racing Hall of Famer whose racing career began in 1949; Jones, who died in 2009, raced primarily in the state of Georgia, but his career spanned at many tracks from Macon to the Florida state line. The 50-lap feature lasted 40 minutes, with 14 starters completing the distance.
On the move: Kaede Loudy of Rogersville, Tenn., started 23rd and finished ninth; Tim Swartz of Ormond Beach, Fla., started 24th and finished 10th.
Winner's sponsors: Yarbrough’s Fleischer Racing Rocket Chassis receives power from a 604 by H&R Racing Engine and carries sponsorship from Top Shelf Trailers, BGR Speedshop Race Consulting & Fabrication, D&S Sitework, Allen’s Pro Trailer Service & Parts, Trailer Trash Inc., Integra Racing Shocks, VP Racing Fuels, Hoosier Racing Tire, Keyser Manufacturing, STAKT Products and Boswell Oil.
