Jason Feger (25) topped Brian Shirley (3s) at Fairbury.
What won the race: Winning a back-and-forth duel with Brian Shirley, two-time and reigning series champ Jason Feger of Bloomington, Ill., led the final two laps Saturday at Fairbury Speedway for a $5,000 MARS Championship Series victory. The seventh-starting Feger first slipped by Shirley on the ninth lap, but Shirley got rolling on the high side after a lap-28 restart to sweep back ahead. Feger edged back ahead on lap 37, Shirley inched back out front on lap 38, then Feger led the rest of the way, surviving a two-lap shootout to the checkers after a late caution.
Quotable: "These guys have had this track on point all year," Feger said. "They've been doing a phenomenal job, making it two lanes and I don't think it's gonna bump on all year, so man, it sure is nice gonna come up here and get a great racetrack."
Key notes: Jason Feger, the Highside Hustler who largely used the low groove, notched his 29th career MARS feature. ... He took the series points lead from Tony Jackson Jr. ... The race went 41 laps because the final caution required a green-white-checkered finish. ... Brian Shirley finished second and Dennis Erb Jr. was third in a brand new Rocket Chassis. ... Daryn Klein led the first two laps and Mike Spatola led laps 3-4 and Shirley led 5-8 amid a flurry of early action before Feger went ahead just before the race's first yellow. ... Three cautions slowed the action, including on the white-flag lap when Jake Little spun on the backstretch. ... The first caution appeared on the 12th lap when Myles Moos stopped on the backstretch. ... On the 28th lap, Ashton Winger slowed with a flat right-rear tire to draw a yellow. ... Engine problems ended Frank Heckenast Jr.'s night in prelims.
On the move: Ryan Unzicker of El Paso, Ill., started 10th and finished fourth; hometown driver McKay Wenger started 11th and finished fifth.
