What won the race: Reigning Selinsgrove Ford Appalachian Mountain Speedweek champion Gregg Satterlee of Indiana, Pa., powered to the $5,000 victory in the miniseries opener on Saturday night at Port Royal Speedway. The eighth-starting Satterlee commanded the final 14 of 35 laps, taking the checkers 1.249 seconds ahead of 14th-starting Jared Miley, who passed race-long leader Trever Feathers for second with three laps left.
Quotable: “We had a good car, just when we got to lapped traffic, I was not quite as maneuverable. We got to racing Trever (Feathers) and I got into him a little bit there when I passed him, I didn’t mean to do that, but we kinda both came low into the corner at the same time,” Satterlee said. “But the car was good, once I got up front I could try to maintain and make good corners to how my car wanted to be the best.”
Key notes: Sattterlee, who sits atop the tour's all-time wins list with 10, powered underneath pole-starting Trever Feathers entering turns one and two on lap 22. … Feathers, of Winchester, Va., led the opening 21 laps and started the night by setting overall fast time with a lap of 17.912 seconds, and earned the pole with another quick lap of 18.984 seconds in the timed dash (top three qualifiers from each group time trial again to determine top-six starting spots). The Virginian is chasing the miniseries title this week aboard the Emory family-owned No. 72 as Tyler Emory, the 2023 AMS champ, recovers from recent stem cell back surgery. ... Third-starting Jason Covert of York Haven, Pa., brought out the first caution when he lost a right-front tire on lap six. … Alex Ferree was supposed to start sixth, but tagged the rear of the field when he encountered mechanical issues before the initial start. He was the race's first retiree on lap five. ... Rick Eckert had a forgetful night, which started when he replaced his transmission after hot laps that forced him to miss qualifying. Eckert eventually used a provisional to start 26th in the feature where he then encountered engine issues in his 15th-place finish. ... Kyle Hardy, winner of the second heat, blew his engine as he crossed the finish line iand scratched from the 35-lap feature. Hardy, the nine-time winner among steel-block and Crate competition this year, was going to start the feature ninth. … Saturday’s event served as the Appalachian Mountain Speedweek opener after Friday’s scheduled event rained out at Clinton County Speedway in Mill Hall, Pa. ... The race lasted 22 minutes, with 20 starters completing the distance.
On the move: Runner-up finisher Jared Miley of Pittsburgh, Pa., started 14th.
