Drake Troutman celebrates his first career World of Outlaws victory.
What won the race: Taking advantage when race-long leader Mike Harrison got out of shape, Drake Troutman of Hyndman, Pa., slipped under in turn four on the 22nd lap Saturday at I-55 Federated Raceway Park en route to a victory co-sanctioned by the World of Outlaws Real American Late Model Series and DIRTcar Summer Nationals. Troutman's first WoO victory on a rough-and-tumble surface paid $20,000 as he took the checkers 2.331 seconds ahead of Harrison in the nonstop 40-lapper.
Quotable: “Man this place was pretty damn treacherous tonight. It sucks it wasn’t a points night for us, but we’re still here racing for $20,000 and it don’t get no better than that,” Troutman said. “I gotta give a huge shoutout to (car owner G.R. Smith) and his whole family for giving me this opportunity. Without them I wouldn’t be here and they put me in the best equipment that money can buy. They truly believed in me from day one.”
Key notes: Troutman's first career WoO victory also marked his third Summer Nationals triumph this season. ... The WoO rookie points leader, 20, is the tour's 104th winner. ... He topped 50-year-old Mike Harrison, a modified driver most of his career who was gunning for his first WoO victory as well. ... Brian Shirley posted a third-place finish after running second early and slipping back to fourth at halfway. ... There appeared to be some extracurricular activity between fourth- and fifth-place finishers Tyler Erb and Bobby Pierce after they traded sheet metal in the closing laps. ... Frequent track-preparation sessions delayed the night's action with the Late Model feature starting after 1 a.m. .... The race was cut to 40 laps (from 55) and drivers were each awarded 100 showup points; several drivers retired early in the feature. ... Sammy Mars had a rollover wreck in turn two in consolation action; he wasn't injured. ... The main event lasted 10 minutes, with 12 starters completing 40 laps and 17 running at the checkers.
On the move: Tyler Erb of New Waverly, Texas, started 21st and finished fourth.
Winner's sponsors: Troutman‘s Team 22 Inc. Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Cornett Engine and sponsored by Victory Circle Auto Sales, Gambler Transport, Brick House Tavern, Armor Security, R.J.’s Excavating, Collins Signs, Sterling Lubricants and Bilstein Shocks.
