Nick Hoffman celebrates at Wayne County atop his car.
What won the race: Overtaking a faltering Jason Feger on a lap-34 restart, Nick Hoffman of Mooresville, N.C., outdueled Zack Mitchell the rest of Sunday's DIRTcar Summer Nationals finale at Wayne County Speedway for a $5,000 victory. Hoffman took the checkers over the 12th-starting Mitchell, who claimed the Week 5 title and fell one spot shy of his fourth victory of the season. Feger clinched his second series title but ended up 15th after a deflating tire cost him the lead and forced him to pit on lap 36.
Quotable: "The Hell tour. I grew up doing it. I love it, you know, it's in my blood and I enjoy coming back," Hoffman said. "I don't get to do it very often, but to finally get my first Late Model win is pretty special to me."
Key notes: Nick Hoffman is the winningest driver on the sister Summit Modified tour (69 victories), but Wayne County gave him his first Summer Nationals victory in a Late Model. ... Jason Feger, who led the first 33 laps and suffered left-side damage in a Hoffman slide job attempt before the winning pass, added the 2025 championship to his 2010 title. ... Last year's champion Tyler Erb made a daring slide job on the first lap to briefly go ahead of Feger, but Feger's crossover carried him back ahead to officially lead the first lap. ... Erb lost two spots on a midrace restart, slowed to change a tire on lap 21 and retired after 24 laps. His title defense hopes ended with a wreck the previous night at Oakshade after contact with Feger. ... Trey Mills, who entered the event leading Week 5 points, lost the title to Zack Mitchell primarily because of a lap-14 flat tire. ... The feature concluded at 11 p.m. .... The race paid $50 per lap led to give Hoffman $350 and Feger $1,650. ... Six cautions slowed the 40-lapper, the first on the 14th lap for Mills's flat. ... On the 17th lap Nathon Loney spun in turn four (Ryan Gustin also changed a flat tire). ... Erb slowed on lap 21. ... On the 32nd lap, eighth-starting Todd Brennan stopped with a flat. ... Kyle Moore, winner of six straight Super Late Model features at Wayne County entering the weekend, slowed on the 34th lap. ... Feger's flat drew a lap-36 yellow. ... Mike Marlar, fresh off winning Saturday's WoO-sanctioned weekend finale at Ohio's Sharon Speedway aboard an older Longhorn Chassis, set Wayne County's fast time in his Infinity Race Car.
On the move: Week 5 champ Zack Mitchell of Enoree, S.C., started 12th and finished second.
Winner's sponsors: Hoffman’s Tye Twarog Racing Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Clements Racing Engine and carries sponsorship from NOS Energy Drink, C&W Trucking, Petroff Towing, Tye Twarog Performance Parts, Lonewolf Petroleum, Haulin’ Haskells, Tri Valley Equipment Sales, Allgaier Performance Parts, Bilstein Shocks, Eibach Springs, Lincoln Smith Racing and KBC Graphix.
