Ashton Winger celebrates his $12,000 Fairbury victory.
What won the race: Ashton Winger of Hampton, Ga., overtook the previous night's winner Ryan Unzicker on the 13th lap Saturday at Fairbury (Ill.) Speedway, then fought off tour champ Jason Feger in the final laps to capture the MARS Championship Series finale and $12,000. Winger took the checkers 0.871 of a second ahead of series champion Feger, who led only the 47th lap of the 50-lap FALS Frenzy finale.
Quotable: "I don't feel so bad about driving by home — they had a race at Senoia a mile from the shop — and everybody was calling me stupid for coming up here," Winger said. "But hell, I just love Illinois, man. Illinois is where it's at, My car's just really good (here)."
Key notes: Ashton Winger won his third MARS feature of the season and second at Fairbury (where he won $10,000 on Aug. 30). ... Runner-up Jason Feger, who led only the 47th lap in a late-race slide-job battle, had clinched the his third consecutive MARS championship prior to the FALS Frenzy weekend. ... Friday's winner Ryan Unzicker led laps 7-12. ... Michigan invader Travis Stemler led the first five laps from outside the front row but slowed on the 26th lap to draw the first of three cautions; he ended up a lap down in 16th. ... Jake Little finished 12th, clinching MARS Rookie of the Year honors. ... The first yellow appeared on the 21st lap when Frank Heckenast Jr. slowed with a broken right-rear shock. ... The third and final caution appeared on the 45th lap for Daniel Adam's broken shock. ... The 22-minute feature concluded at 10:51 p.m.; 15 starters completed 50 laps.
