Garrett Alberson fires the fake six-shooters in victory lane.
What won the race: Winning his third career Rio Grande Waste Services Wild West Shootout victory, Garrett Alberson of Las Cruces, N.M., led all 40 laps Saturday at Central Arizona Raceway for a $15,000 payday. Alberson wasn't seriously challenged in taking the checkers 5.486 seconds ahead of Hudson O'Neal in a caution-free main event.
Quotable: "I love when it goes caution-free. I'm a green-flag racer," said Alberson, who was a bit under the weather. "I kind of caught a lapped traffic there and I really wasn't sure where to be at. I was getting a little warm at times — I was trying to manage that, it was so dirty and stuff — so I was trying to pick my battles. But a couple of times I just had to go, you know what I mean?"
Key notes: Winner Garrett Alberson brought out his second car Saturday after he broke a rocker arm in the engine of the car he'd run the previous four nights. ... Alberson, who lapped all but 10 competitors, led by five seconds during most of the final 12 laps, his only scare coming to the white flag when he got over the cushion briefly in turn four. ... Runner-up Hudson O'Neal took second from Jonathan Davenport with two laps remaining. ... The miniseries-points leading O'Neal and Pierce battled for third much of the race. ... Brandon Sheppard retired after five laps, spinning into the infield trying to exit with engine woes. ... Title sponsor Rio Grande Waste Services added extra money to the scheduled $10,000-to-win purse, including $5,000 for the winner. ... Scheduled front-row starter Mike Marlar ducked to the hot pit before the race began to have the crew check on an electrical or battery issue; he elected to not take the green flag. ... Eston Whisler had transmission problems before the race began and retired early. ... The event drew one of the biggest crowds in miniseries history. ... The Wild West Shootout concludes Sunday with a $25,000-to-win feature including another $25,000 in lap money up for grabs. ... Watch live on FloRacing.
On the move: Ryan Gustin of Marshalltown, Iowa, started 10th and finished sixth.
Winner's sponsors: Alberson's Roberts Motorsports Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Clements Racing Engine and sponsored by Mesilla Valley Transportation, Low Voltage Solutions, Done Right TV, Bill's Sport Shop, Roemer Machine & Welding, Sims Family Racing, Capitol Screen Company, Nutrien Ag Solutions, Mitchell Ranch, J.
