Brandon Sheppard (1) passes Brandon Overton for the lead at Hagerstown.
What won the race: Overtaking Brandon Overton on the third lap, polesitter Brandon Sheppard of New Berlin, Ill., cruised the rest of Sunday's Conococheague 40 at Hagerstown Speedway. Sheppard beat Overton by a distant 5.733 seconds for the $10,000 payday, his third Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series victory of the season.
Quotable: “These guys been giving me a great piece night in and night out. At the end of the day, it’s a lot of tough competition out here,” Sheppard said. “Night in and night out, no matter what you do, if you’ve got the fastest car, you may not win that night cause the competition is just so tough. I think our car’s been really fast all year long. I don’t think I’ve felt terrible anytime that I’ve ever hit the track this year, so that says a lot about these new Rocket XR2s.”
Key notes: Sheppard notched his 35th career full-field Lucas Oil Series victory. ... It was the first Hagerstown victory for the Rocket1 house car since May 15, 2010, when Josh Richards of Shinnston, W.Va., topped a World of Outlaws field for $10,000. ... Second-starting Brandon Overton led the opening two laps before giving way to Sheppard. Overton traded the runner-up spot with Ricky Thornton Jr. around the race's halfway mark before pulling away in the closing laps and finishing second; Thornton backslid to sixth at the checkers. ... Hudson O'Neal steadily advanced from his 11th starting spot and rounded out the podium finishers. ... Devin Moran, winner of Friday's weekend opener at Georgetown (Del.) Speedway, finished fourth. ... Mason Zeigler challenged Moran on a lap-11 restart before slipping to finish 10th in his first start of the season. ... Carson Ferguson took ninth from Zeigler on the final lap. ... Making his Hagerstown debut, third-starting Josh Rice faded to finish 19th, the final starter running at the finish. ... The race's lone caution flew on lap 11 when Daniel Hilsabeck slowed after apparent engine failure. ... Clay Harris retired a few laps later after resorting to his backup car when he failed to finish the night's consolation. ... The Conococheague 40 lasted 18 minutes with 14 starters completing the distance. … Kyle Hardy won the time-shortened Crate Late Model feature on the undercard, earning $1,500.
On the move: Carson Ferguson of Lincolnton, N.C., started 19th and finished ninth.
Winner's sponsors: Sheppard's Rocket Chassis has a Durham Racing Engine and sponsorship from Valvoline, Seubert Calf Ranches, Collins Brothers Towing of St. Cloud, Five Star RaceCar Bodies, Rocket Chassis, Ace Metal Works, Gunter’s Honey, Hoosier Racing Tire, Fox Shocks, Keyser Manufacturing, Petroff Towing, Performance Grading, Stiles Marine & Maintenance, Sunoco Race Fuels and Rocket Preowned Motors.
