Ryan Gustin takes the checkers for his Late Model victory.
What won the race: After winning the modified feature, polesitter Ryan Gustin of Marshalltown, Iowa, led all 40 laps of the Port-a-Cool Texas Dirt Track World Championship for his first career SUPR victory and $3,500 paycheck. Gustin beat fellow front-row starter Allen Tippen to the checkered flag by 3.026 seconds while Ray Moore was third.
Quotable: “I didn’t think anybody had won the Late Model and the modified before, but that’s awesome and pretty cool that we were able to do that tonight,” said Gustin, the first to accomplish the feat. “That feels really good. Luck was on our side for sure with everything that went on tonight and we will take it.”
Key notes: Gustin has three total Late Model victories on the season; he also won the evening's modified feature at TMS, becoming the first two-time feature winner the same weekend at the track. ... Last year's race winner Morgan Bagley of Longview, Texas, was the feature's first retiree. ... Derek Perkins and Chris Taylor scratched from heat race action. ... The Port-a-Cool Texas Dirt Track World Championship has served as the series season-opener in recent years, but was pushed back to May this season. ... The weekend event kicked off Friday night with a practice session.
On the move: Danny Zimmerman of Wiley, Texas, ascended nine positions from the 18th starting spot.
Winner's sponsors: Gustin’s Ed and Cinde Gressel-owned Rocket Chassis has a Mullins Race Engine and is sponsored by Brown & Miller Racing Solutions, CPD Racing Tools, Eibach Springs, FastShafts, Henryetta Ford, Integra Racing Shocks, Larry's Performance Carburetors, Midwest Sheet Metal, R2C Performance Products, Sybesma Graphics and VP Race Fuels
