Ferri, Briggs grab weekend wins in Ontario

Adam Ferri and Boom Briggs captured victories on the Ontario Dirt Late Models Civic Holiday Challenge on Aug. 2-3. Ferri, of Port Colborne, won Saturday at Merrittville Speedway while Briggs, of Bear Lake, N.Y., won at Humberstone Speedway. Each driver picked up $2,000 for the victories. Chris Ross of Wallaceburg, Ontario, posted second- and fourth-place finishes to take the weekend points title. | Slideshow
In the opener at Merrittville, Ferri outran Ross for his second career ODLM victory. Greg Oakes of Franklinville, N.Y., was third followed by Doug Ricotta of Warsaw, N.Y., and former series champion Jim Dale Jr. of Shrewsbury, Ontario.
In the weekend finale at Humberstone, Ricotta led the first 10 laps, but Briggs took command on the 11th lap and led the rest of the 30-lap main event. Chad Valone of Warren, Pa., rebounding after breaking a driveshaft the previous night, finished second with Ricotta settling for third. Ferri broke a driveshaft while running second.
Notes: Chris Ross totalled 224 points on the weekend to top Doug Ricotta (222) and Greg Oakes (219). ... The weekend's Thruway Muffler Hard Charger winners were Paul Turner (Merrittville) and Jeff Dayman (Humberstone). ... Briggs made a big improvement from his previous visit to Canada. At the World of Outlaws Late Model Series event at Cornwall Motor Speedway on June 22, Briggs violently flipped his car in hot laps. ... Adam West of Ridgetown, Ontario, a veteran sprint car driver, posted a sixth-place finish at Humberstone in his second career Late Model race. ... ODLM competitors next visit Ohsweken Speedway on Aug. 29 before wrapping up the season on Sept. 20 at Brighton Speedway.
