Cousin's problems help Jake Knowles win at Rome

ROME, Ga. (Aug. 31) — Jake Knowles of Tyrone, Ga., inherited the lead from his cousin on the 37th lap at Rome International Speedway and led the final three laps of the annual Rome Boss.
Fast qualifier and polesitter Tony Knowles set sail from the start of the 40-lapper as he rebuffed early challenges from his cousin as well as Travis Pennington in a race slowed by eight caution periods. Tony Knowles led 37 laps before contact with a lapped car damaged his car's radiator, knocking him out of the race and handing the lead to eventual winner Jake Knowles. Robert Gant of Flat Rock, Ala., finished second followed by Ricky Williams of Fayetteville, Ga.
Notes: The event drew 150 race cars overall, including 27 Super Late Models. ... Bobby Tucker picked up the victory in Limited Late Model action after initial winner Jeff Fields was disqualified for using illegal tires. ... Chuck Padgett led all twenty-laps of the Sportsman feature event for the win over Jimmy Long in second and Allan Brewer in third. ... Rome is back in action Sept. 14 for a Carl Black Top Tracks Challenge event paying $1,500 to the winner.
