Breaking down HTF championship scenarios
By Kyle McFadden
DirtonDirt staff reporterThe Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series wraps up its third season with the championship still up for grabs for the 35th annual Blue-Gray 100 weekend at Cherokee Speedway in Gaffney, S.C. Here’s a breakdown of series points and title scenarios with $8,022- and $35,000-to-win programs making up the Friday-Saturday weekend:
Series standings
1. Jimmy Owens (968 points)
2. Zack Mitchell (966)
3. Cory Hedgecock (936)
4. Joseph Joiner (914)
5. Dalton Cook (896)
Title scenarios
Jimmy Owens: Controlling his own destiny, Owens can collect his first series title staying ahead of Mitchell and securing a pair of top-10 finishes provided third-place Cory Hedgecock doesn’t sweep the weekend with back-to-back wins.
Zack Mitchell: With 100 points going to the winner and 94 to second, with a two-point reduction thereafter, staying ahead of Owens both nights puts him in position for his first title. Top-10 runs will still be pivotal to keep Hedgecock, Joiner and/or Cook behind.
Cory Hedgecock: He'll have to finish multiple spots ahead of Owens and Mitchell, preferably winning both nights. Without a victory, he must finish at least a combined 17 positions ahead of Owens and 15 ahead of Mitchell over the weekend’s two races. One win cuts those numbers to 15 and 13. A weekend sweep would reduce them further to 13 and 11.
Joseph Joiner: At 54 points behind, he needs everything to go his way, which likely means at least a victory and bad luck for the three drivers ahead. Should he sweep the weekend, Owens and Mitchell would need to average a 13th-place finish or worse while Hedge would have an average finish worse than fourth for him to win the title.
Dalton Cook: Even if he sweeps the weekend, he'll still need Jimmy Owens and Zack Mitchell to have an average finish of 18th or worse, Hedgecock to have an average finish of ninth or worse and Joiner to have an average finish of fifth or worse.
Tiebreakers
The first tiebreaker is based on the driver with the most series victories. Owens enters the weekend with three victories, but one-race winners Mitchell, Hedgecock and Cook could match Owens by sweeping both races. If Mitchell or Cook sweep and tie Owens in points, Owens would win the second tiebreaker of most second-place finishes (one). Things are more complicated if Hedgecock sweeps and ties Owens in points. Each of them enter the weekend with a single second-place finish, forcing a third tiebreaker of most third-place finishes (provided Owens isn’t second in either event). The third tiebreaker would give Hedgecock the title by virtue of having two third-place finishes, unless Owens gets two third-place finishes, giving him the tiebreaker. If Owens has a single third-place finish, that would force a fourth tiebreaker. Provided Owens didn’t finish fourth either night, they'd again tie on the fourth tiebreaker with one fourth-place finish apiece. Owens would win a fifth tiebreaker by virtue of his single fifth-place finish.
Editor's note: The above information is based on points as of Friday morning; the series confirmed Friday afternoon that Zack Mitchell was docked 100 points for his disqualification from Sept. 27's series victory at Southern Raceway in Milton, Fla., because a tire used in that race failed to meet manufacturer benchmarks in postrace lab tests.
