Georgia-Florida Speedweeks

Georgia-Florida Speedweeks Almanac (Jan. 22)

January 22, 2026, 11:23 am
By Todd Turner
DirtonDirt managing editor

Speedweeks progress: First of 30 originally scheduled Super Late Model events from Jan. 22-March 7

Venue: Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, Fla.

Race details: The World of Outlaws Late Model Series opens the season with a $12,000-to-win event.

Weather forecast: Daytime, mix of clouds and sun. High 72F. Winds NNE at 10-15 mph; nighttime partly cloudy. Low 57F. Winds N at 5-10 mph.

Who's Hot: Hudson O’Neal of Martinsville, Ind., January’s Rio Grande Waste Services Wild West Shootout champion and the lone two-time winner during the six-race Arizona miniseries.

Who's Not: Brandon Sheppard of New Berlin, Ill., only once better than 10th in six Wild West West Shootout starts (he’ll be in the Rocket Chassis house car at Volusia after fielding his family-owned No. B5 in Arizona).

DirtonDirt prediction: Hudson O’Neal and Kevin Rumley didn’t make the cross-country trek from Casa Grande, Ariz., for nothing. They pick up their third win together of 2026 over podium finishers Nick Hoffman and Chris Madden in WoO's opener. — Kyle McFadden

Around the Pits: Devin Moran (three victories) is the lone driver with multiple feature victories in five years of Sunshine Nationals action. … Chris Madden, debuting his Infinity house car, had Wednesday’s fastest practice lap at 14.814 seconds. … The Sunshine Nationals have averaged 49.2 cars over five seasons with a high of 58 cars in 2024. … The WoO points leader following the Sunshine Nationals has gone on to win the tour championship once (Brandon Sheppard in 2024). … Only one Sunshine Nationals feature winner (fifth-starting Devin Moran in 2024) has started worse than third in a Sunshine Nationals main event.

Up next: Friday’s second of three rounds of the Sunshine Nationals at Volusia, a $12,000-to-win event.

Next week: South Georgia Showdown Jan. 30-31 on the Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series at Needmore Speedway in Norman Park, Ga.

This Date in Dirt Late Model History: On Jan. 22, 2005, Steve Francis of Ashland, Ky., drove his Moring Motorsports entry to a $10,000 victory in the finale of the Early Thaw miniseries at Central Arizona Raceway in Casa Grande.

Trivia: Which Iowa-based driver, who wouldn’t win at Volusia for another four years, made his debut at the track in 1981? (Answer in Friday’s almanac.)
