Georgia-Florida Speedweeks Almanac (Feb. 7)
By Todd Turner
DirtonDirt managing editorSaturday's race: Sixth of 30 originally scheduled Super Late Model events from Jan. 22-March 7.
Venue: Screven Motor Speedway in Sylvania, Ga.
Race details: The Winter Freeze finale on Ray Cook's Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series paying $25,000-to-win.
Weather forecast: Sunny today (2 percent chance of precipitation). High 58F. Winds NNW at 5 to 10 mph. Clear skies tonight. Low 27F. Winds light and variable.
Who's Hot: Friday’s Screven winner Brandon Overton of Evans, Ga., a winner of back-to-back starts for the first time in nearly three years.
Who's Not: New Big Frog Motorsports driver Daulton Wilson of Fayetteville, N.C., looking for just his second top-five finish since September.
DirtonDirt prediction: Capitalizing on a better starting spot than his eighth-row start Friday, Casey Roberts of Toccoa, Ga., captures the Screven finale for his richest career victory and third career Georgia-Florida Speedweeks triumph. — Todd Turner
Around the Pits: Brandon Overton’s victory made him the winningest Super Late Model driver (five victories) in Winter Freeze history. … Ross Bailes was running second in a Brian Nuttall-owned car in the main event when a tangle with a lapped car ended his chances. … The winner’s brother Cody Overton hit the wall in Friday’s heat action, ending his night.
Next week: Volusia’s DIRTcar Nationals on Feb. 9-14 includes three nights of DIRTcar action and three nights of World of Outlaws Late Model Series competition.
This Date in Dirt Late Model History: On Feb. 7, 1986, veteran Cecil Eunice of Blackshear, Ga., races to a Speedweeks victory in Jacksonville, Fla.
Speedweeks trivia: Which Hall of Fame driver from Indiana notched his only Speedweeks victory at the Florida State Fairgrounds in Tampa? (Answer in Monday's almanac; Friday's answer for two-time 1981 Speedweeks winner: Jack Boggs).
