Georgia-Florida Speedweeks Almanac (Feb. 10)
By Todd Turner
DirtonDirt managing editorTuesday's race: Eighth of 30 originally scheduled Super Late Model events from Jan. 22-March 7.
Venue: Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, Fla.
Race details: The second round of the Federated Auto Parts DIRTcar Nationals pays $7,000-to-win for the non-touring DIRTcar Super Late Model event.
Weather forecast: Sunny in daytime with 8 percent chance of precipitation. High 79F. Winds SW at 5 to 10 mph; Partly cloudy skies at night. Low near 50F. Winds light and variable.
Who's Hot: Hot is an understatement for Brandon Overton of Evans, Ga., who is on a streak of four consecutive Georgia-Florida Speedweeks victories among three tracks, including Monday’s $7,000 Volusia opener.
Who's Not: Brian Shirley of Chatham, Ill., is off to another struggling Speedweeks after engine woes Monday in Volusia’s hot laps, his second powerplant issue in four days.
DirtonDirt prediction: Bobby Pierce of Oakwood, Ill., gets on track at Volusia for not only his first top-five finish at the track in 2026 but his first victory, ending runner-up Brandon Overton’s personal winning streak. — Todd Turner
Around the Pits: Brandon Overton’s fourth straight Speedweeks victory matches record victory stretches of Brandon Sheppard (2019, all at Volusia) and Billy Moyer (2008, two at East Bay, two at Volusia). … Monday’s 56 entries were five more than last year’s DIRTcar Nationals opener. … Max Blair is ninth or better in his last 10 Volusia feature starts, including Monday’s fourth-place finish. … Ryan Gustin’s 12th-place run on Monday ended a streak of five straight top-10 finishes in Speedweeks action.
Up next: Triple $5,000-to-win DIRTcar semifeatures Wednesday at Volusia.
Next week: The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series opens its season with Feb. 19-21 events at All-Tech Raceway in Ellisville, Fla.
This Date in Dirt Late Model History: On Feb. 10, 1984, Jeff Purvis captures an All-Star Circuit of Champions feature in Jacksonville, Fla., for his first of 12 career Speedweeks victories, including four that winter split between Jacksonville and Volusia.
Speedweeks trivia: Who was the last Speedweeks winner on Volusia’s now-paved 3/8-mile dirt layout that hosted action when the half-mile circuit was asphalt? (Answer in Wednesday's almanac; Monday's answer: Kenny Merchant of Ruston, La., the lone Louisiana-based Speedweeks winner).
