Notes: North Alabama, Moulton form miniseries

January 23, 2009, 1:47 pm
From correspondent, track and staff reports

Racers in northwest Alabama and the surrounding region will have a chance at some extra-purse races with the formation of the two-track Bama Super Series. North Alabama Speedway in Tuscumbia and Moulton Speedway have joined to run the 10-race miniseries with races ranging from $2,000-to-win up to $5,000-to-win.

The drivers accumulating the most points in Bama Super Series events will receive $5,000 with the rest of the top 10 in points cashing in as well. Each event will have a $100 entry fee with half of it going to the points fund.

The first five North Alabama races, starting March 20, will pay $2,000 to the winner and $300 to start. The four Moulton races increase the winner's purse to $3,000. The miniseries finale on Sept. 6 at North Alabama pays $5,000 to the winner.

For more information, visit websites for North Alabama and Moulton or call promoters Jeff Greer (256) 247-0055 or Doug McKleroy at (256) 446-5498. — Ben Shelton

ATTICA MOVES TO FULL-FLEDGED UMP LATE MODELS: Attica (Ohio) Raceway Park, a third-mile track that ran a modified version of UMP DIRTcar rules in recent years, adopted the full rules package for 2009 to allow drivers to compete for weekly points with the Indiana-based organization. "With no other dirt tracks in the area racing late models on Friday nights, we received a lot of interest from race teams and fans to make the division full UMP late models. With many tracks racing on Saturday nights, Attica will be the place to be on Friday nights to see all the Late Model stars racing together on the same track," said promoter John Bores, himself a Late Model driver. Late Models will be joined by 410 sprints, 305 sprints and occasionally dirt trucks for Attica's weekly events. The weekly Late Model purse remains at $1,000 to win and $150 to start the main event. ELKINS HIRED TO RUN EAST LINCOLN: Clint Elkins has resigned as series director of the Carolina Clash Super Late Model Series to promote East Lincoln Speedway for new owners Bob Mack and Ray Evernham, the long-time NASCAR crew chief and team owner. Elkins plans to promote Carolina Speedway in Gastonia, N.C., on Fridays and the East Lincoln oval near Stanley on Saturdays. "We have a lot to handle the next few months," Elkins said of his work at East Lincoln, were a resurfaced track, remodeled VIP suites and other safety improvements are on his to-do list. Elkins doesn't plan on a weekly Late Model division but expects to run a handful of Crate Late Model special events and perhaps a few Super Late Model races. "The biggest thing we have to do is get the weekly program built back up here," said Elkins, adding that rules discrepancies with other nearby tracks have hampered East Lincoln. "If we get that done, we might tackle some more special events." The 3/8-mile oval is scheduled to open April 4. — Todd Turner

GREEN VALLEY, TALLADEGA FORM COOPERATIVE: Two Alabama tracks that have competed on Saturdays frequently in recent years have agreed to work together in 2009. Green Valley Speedway in Glencoe, Ala., will move its stock car program to Friday to complement the Saturday program at Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, Ala., 32 miles south. The tracks plan cross-promotional events for Friday-Saturday weekends benefitting area racers and fans. “It’s an honor for me to be working with (Lynn) Phillips and the crew at Talladega Short Track,” said Green Valley owner Dennis Harker. "This is good for the racing community and both tracks." Long-time TST announcer Perry Holman will also call the action Fridays at Green Valley. — Dennis Anton

FOUR TRACKS RUNNING ULMA: The 3-year-old United Late Model Association will sanction 2009 racing at two Friday tracks and two Saturday tracks in Missouri. Callaway Raceway in Fulton and Butler Motor Speedway will run Friday events while Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland and Grain Valley Speedway just east of Kansas City will run Saturday races. Overall ULMA has 70 points races scheduled so far for its Limited Late Models, including specials at Central Missouri Speedway in Warrensburg and 24 Raceway in Moberly. — From ULMA reports
