Elliott collects $5,000 with New Egypt victory
From track reports
NEW EGYPT, N.J. (Oct. 14) — Picking up a special event victory for the second weekend in a row, Ricky Elliott of Seaford, Del., led all 40 laps of the unsanctioned Roctober at the Jersey Shore Late Model special at New Egypt Speedway. Elliott picked up $5,000 to match the winning purse of his Oct. 6 Mid-Atlantic Championship Series victory in Cumberland, Md.
"We had a great car today," Elliott said. "I just want to thank everyone who helps make this possible. I knew Tim (Fuller) was there the last 10 laps and I just concentrated on keeping my line up on the cushion."
Starting outside the front row, Elliott grabbed the lead on the initial start as Mark Pettyjohn gave chase. Elliott and Pettyjohn quickly opened up a large lead on the rest of the field as former New Egypt sportsman champion G.R. Smith raced into third followed by his teammate Don Lingo and the 12th-starting Tim Fuller.
Fuller, the 2007 World of Outlaws Late Model Series Late Model rookie of the year, was on a mission as he charged into third.
The first caution of was displayed at the halfway mark, tightening the field behind Elliott as just nine cars were on the lead lap. Fuller went back to work on the restart, taking second from Pettyjohn and aiming for Elliott's top spot.
Elliott was setting a blistering pace, but he couldn't shake Fuller until he got back into lapped traffic and opened up an eight-length advantage. But a lap-30 caution again erased Elliott's edge and Fuller turned up the heat the final 10 laps. At times, Fuller peeked under the leader, but he wasn't able to get the bite he needed in the low groove to pull off the winning pass.
Elliott drove the perfect line on the high-side cushion over the final 10 laps to beat Fuller by a car length. Mark Pettyjohn held off brother Kenny for third while Lingo was fifth.
