Notebook: Keeton takes aim at 3rd title in a row

The 2008 NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series opened the last weekend in March and defending and two-time West Region Champion Lucky Keeton of Toomsuba, Miss., took aim at his third straight title with two victories. Keeton raced to victories at Southern Speedway in Hattiesburg, Miss., and Whynot Motorsports Park near Meridian, Miss., to top the West points.

Dana Eiland of Salem, Ala., used a pair of third-place finishes on March 28 at Penton (Ala.) Raceway and March 29 at East Alabama Motor Speedway in Phenix City, Ala., to top the list in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series East Region with 90 points.
Three NeSmith-sanctioned tracks are scheduled to open the first weekend in April: Baton Rouge (La.) Raceway, Butler County Motorsports Park in Greenville, ALa., and Twin Cities Raceway Park in North Vernon, Ind. — Roby Helm
SOUTHERN DROPS NESMITH SANCTIONING: Southern Raceway in Milton, Fla., has dropped weekly sanctioning by the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series. The track will continue to run its Crate division unsanctioned with $1,000-to-win features each Saturday and the track champion will receive a new GM 604 Crate engine. Southern hosts a $5000-to-win special on April 4-5. Besides the top purse, the winner will also receive a guaranteed starting spot in November's Southern 100. — From track reports

ODDS AND ENDS: Dennis "Rambo" Franklin of Gaffney, S.C., pocketed $3,000 for his March 28 victory at Gordon Park Speedway near Augusta, Ga. ... Jonathan Davenport and Austin Dillon split twin features on the Fastrak Racing Series on March 29 at 311 Motor Speedway in Madison, N.C. ... Joseph Joiner, a 14-year-old Florida driver, won the 25-lap Crate feature March 29 at Deep South Speedway in Loxley, Ala., breaking Nathan Ingersoll's two-race win streak. ... Tanner English, son of former track champion Terry English, outdueled Nick Lyons for a victory in the season-opening UMP-sanctioned Crate feature at Paducah (Ky.) International Raceway.
