PHENIX CITY, Ala. (Sept. 2) — Coming alive after dropping to fourth early, Frank Ingram of Woodstock, Ga., swept around three competitors just past the race's midpoint and held on for a Top Track victory at East Alabama Motor Speedway. Fellow Georgian Jake Knowles finished second followed by hometown star Dana Eiland, Frankie Beard and former series champion Mike Head.

After a first-lap melee eliminated four competitors, Ingram led the first lap. But Beard moved past Ingram in turns three and four to take the point on the second lap. Ingram hung with Beard for a while, but eventually Knowles dropped Ingram to third and he dropped to fourth when he slipped high in front of Eiland.

Knowles was speeding along in the low groove, but he ran into heavy lapped traffic on lap 13. With the frontrunners bogged down, the fourth-running Ingram flew into the cushion in turn three to regain the point.

Ingram kept up his momentum and had a cushion of five lapped cars in the waning laps. But a caution for J.J. Nye's spin on lap 28 reset the field. Ingram held on to win while Knowles held second ahead of Eiland and Beard. — Jay Vaquer
