Brandon Sheppard celebrates his historic victory at Jacksonville.
What won the race: Drawing a roar from the partisan crowd when he edged past Shannon Babb on lap 27, local favorite Brandon Sheppard Jr. of New Berlin, Ill., led the rest of Sunday’s 40-lap World of Outlaws Case Late Model Series event at Jacksonville Raceway to become the all-time winningest driver in tour history. Sheppard earned $10,000 as his 79th career WoO victory broke a tie atop the list with Josh Richards.
Quotable: “It’s amazing to be here in front of the hometown crowd, being 15 minutes from the house,” Sheppard said. “Getting this win for my dad and my grandpa means the world to me and I know it means the world to them."
Key notes: Sheppard has won 74 of his 79 WoO features in the Rocket Chassis house car, but this was the fourth in his family-owned No. B5 (he also won a WoO feature for Best Performance Motorsports). ... Runner-up Shannon Babb led 26 laps but knew Sheppard would be tough to outrun. "When I bobbled once, he just pounced," Babb said. ... Five cautions slowed the action, including a lap-two yellow when third-running Brian Shirley spun in turn two after a scrape with Shane Clanton, collecting Frank Heckenast Jr. (Clanton apologized in his postrace interview for his part in the incident). ... Kolby Vandenbergh and Tommy Sheppard Jr. tangled in turn one on lap 34. ... Ashton Winger drew a lap-28 yellow. ... A lap-23 caution flew for Preston Luckman's spin between turns one and two. ... A lap-20 yellow appeared when Jake Little slowed with a right-front flat tire. ... Trevor Gundaker fielded his older brother Gordy’s backup car. … Payton Freeman’s car suffered significant damage in a frontstretch heat-race tangle with Tommy Sheppard Jr.
On the move: Tanner English of Benton, Ky., started 12th and finished fourth.
Winner's sponsors: Sheppard’s Rocket Chassis has a Pro Power Racing Engine and sponsorship from Valvoline, TrueTimber Camo, Wild Gear, Dennis G. Woodworth Attorney at Law, The Goddard School for Early Childhood Development, Keyser Mfg., 34 Raceway, Budda Dirt Cars Transmission Sales & Service, Guse's Pub & Eatery, Mark Richards Racing, Print Worx, Sheppard Auto Sales, Speedwerx, Bill West Enterprises and Fromme Enterprises.
