Ashton Winger celebrates at Lake Cumberland Speedway on Monday.
What won the race: Winning his tour-leading fourth DIRTcar Summer Nationals feature of 2023, Ashton Winger of Hampton, Ga., overtook race-long leader and fellow front-row starter Tyler Clem amid traffic with six laps remaining Monday at Lake Cumberland Speedway and grabbed a $7,500 victory. Winger also wrapped up his $10,000 weekly points title as the tour completed Week 3 in a race postponed 24 hours by rain.
Quotable: "Our car's good. I didn't do what I needed to do there on that start and I'm gonna try to bide my time and be patient, but then the longer and longer we went, lapped traffic was just treacherous," Winger said. "I definitely knew I needed to pull the trigger if he made one bad move. ... Luckily it worked out. I know it was a tight fit."
Key notes: Winger, who took the checkers 1.096 seconds ahead of Tyler Clem, has 10 career series victories. ... Tyler Clem, driving the Big Frog Motorsports car that Winger had a stint in last season, led the first 34 laps in making a bid for his first Summer Nationals victory. Clem said he's heading back to Florida after a three-week tour run ... All three weekly champions have won the week's final event. ... Lake Cumberland hosted a series event for the first time. ... Two cautions slowed the feature (lap 17 for debris after David Webb's departure with a broken driveshaft; lap 37 for a spin involving Billy Moyer Jr., Bob Gardner and Shayne Bailey). ... Kye Blight started the feature after breaking a driveshaft and sustaining rear suspension damage in heat racing. ... The race was pushed to Monday from Sunday by rain. ... The 14-car turnout was the lowest of the season on the series.
On the move: Kye Blight of Katanning, Western, Australia, started 14th and finished sixth.
Winner's sponsors: Winger’s Jeff Mathews Motorsports Rocket Chassis is powered by an Andy Durham Racing Engine and carries sponsorship from Johnny Doan Plumbing, RV Select Inc., Keyser Manufacturing, Integra Shocks, Angry Elephant Tattoo and Piercing, FK Rod Ends, Super K Express, Hoosier Tire, Simpson Race Products, Collins Signs, DirtCarLift.com, VP Race Fuels, Boswell Oil and WrapTeck.
