Jeff Provinzino celebrates his first Challenge Series victory since 2017.
What won the race: Inheriting the lead when race-dominating Lee Grosz spun in turn two after 23 laps, Jeff Provinzino of Hibbing, Minn., captured Saturday's Structural Buildings WISSOTA Challenge Series event at Viking Speedway and $3,000. Outside front-row starter Shane Sabraski finished 0.682 of a second behind the third-starting Provinzino at the checkers.
Quotable: "We built (the car) ourselves from scratch and that makes it extra special," Provinzino said. "I mean, to race against all these guys that buy their cars, spend all this money, and we do it ourself, it makes it that much better."
Key notes: Jeff Provinzino notched his eighth career WISSOTA Challenge victory and first since 2017, when he won Sept. 2 at his hometown Hibbing Speedway. ... Provinzino's win lifts him into the early season points lead. ... Polesitter Lee Grosz, a former sprint car and modified racer in his second full Late Model season, was looking for his biggest career full-fender victory. ... Grosz's lap-23 spin was the race's lone caution; he retired. ... Twenty of 25 starters completed 30 laps. ... In prelim action, Don Shaw slowed suddenly at the end of the second heat, leaving Chris Mensen nowhere to go. Mensen slammed into the rear of Shaw's car, then into the infield wall before needing assistance exiting. Shaw limped his damaged machine back to the pits before loading up. ... Viking opened its 60th season.
On the move: Kevin Eder of Cameron, Wis., started 15th and finished eighth.
Winner's sponsors: Jeff Provinzino's self-designed 28 Special Race Car is sponsored by U.S. Tennis & Recreation, High on the Hog BBQ, Ridge Runner Ranch, Palmer's Tavern, Scaiangelo, Consulting and S.C. Electric.
Points chase: After Viking: 1. Jeff Provinzino (111); 2. Shane Sabraski (110); 3. Cole Searing (106); 4. Zach Johnson (103); 5. Dave Mass (100).
